Stuck on Repeat
Near clearly remembers the first time that he saw Mello all of those years ago.
He was just another boy who was considered a genius, just another boy who was being given a chance to become L's successor. He was just another orphan, just another victim of the harsh realities that life has to offer.
There was, however, a difference between Mello and all of the others who were brought to the orphanage, Near noticed.
He was crying because his parents were dead and gone and he was too young to grasp and handle the concepts of death and loneliness, because he didn't know where he was or what was going to happen to him in this new and unfamiliar place. Tears spilled from bloodshot eyes and onto the floor, and there was an effort to give him comfort in this desperate time of need, whereas everyone else seemed heartless at best, their insides frozen and incapable of working to help a living human being function the way that they're supposed to.
Near just sat still, watched, and his glares were eventually felt and noticed--and Mello was brought over to him and they were both told to say hello, because they would be seeing each other a lot and--maybe they could be friends.
Near said nothing, just stared and waited for anything at all. Mello just kept crying, and if he said even just one word, it was incoherent and unworthy of the other boy's time.
After a few moments of having nothing but sobs echo throughout the building, Near saw Mello being taken away to get a tour of the orphanage.
He went back to playing with his toys, and that was the end of that.
(That was then.)

(And this is now.)
Now, L is no longer a part of this world filled with intense hatred and less criminals and innocent lives being destroyed and notebooks that can kill.
It's the time that everyone in the orphanage has been waiting for since they were rescued and given a home and trained to be the best.
It's time to choose a successor.
Near and Mello are brought in. No one else. It should be unusual in Near's eyes, but it's not. He already knows what's going to happen, and he knows it's not going to be a pretty sight, but this isn't his choice and he can't try to change it anymore, can't try to prove that he's the only one who should be chosen and in this room right here and now.
As expected, Near is announced as number one.
As expected, Mello is asked to work with Near, because together, they can bring Kira to justice.
As expected, all Mello can think about is how he's second best and how he wants to be number one.
As expected, Mello says good-bye and that he'll find his way to the top on his own and he leaves. He doesn't say thank you for all the help he's received over the years, doesn't look like he has any intentions on coming back and begging to help.
And Near thinks that it's so very, very different from when he saw Mello for the first time. He was unpredictable back then, but all of this was anticipated. He was unable to make his own decisions in life back then, but he can now and he's done just that. He wasn't worthy in Near's eyes back then, but he is now--and it's a shame that he feels the needs to run away and find his own path.
(But he also thinks that it's so very, very similar to when he saw Mello for the first time--because he's still utterly alone and heartbroken and there's too many pieces of his puzzle missing and he's crying and dying on the inside and he's still not satisfied with where he is in life.)
