Here's something we don't see very often:  a big smile in a Victorian cabinet card portrait.  This is Nathan (Nate) Salsbury (1846-1902), founder and manager of Salsbury's Troubadours, a musical comedy troupe that performed in the 1870s-80s.  Salsbury later became co-owner of the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show.

I am guessing these ladies are sisters.  They were probably pioneers who traveled by wagon to the gold rush in the Black Hills of South Dakota.  The town of Lead was officially founded in 1876.  These ladies helped construct a homestead, raised families, and survived the harsh winters.  Their faces reflect enormous dignity and good humor.  I bet ( Read more... )
