My guess is that exposure times were so long in those days that people weren't encouraged to smile for the camera. It was too difficult to maintain it for minutes at a time and any movement, no matter how slight, would blur in the photograph. Yeah, between the minutes-long exposure and the timne it took to focus the camera, a person could be sitting there an awfully long time by today's standards.
What is that adorning her bonnet? Scarlet ribbons? Dance cards from the cotillions she attended? Lottery tickets? Calling cards from her Gentleman Callers? Inquiring minds want to know.
Such a pretty bonnet-- and such a sad face. You know, the more I look, the more it seems she has a droop on the right side. Check out the corner of the eye and mouth. (Bell's palsy?)
Still, her clothing is lovely. And she has a strong and interesting face.
You know, now that you mention it, it DOES look a little bit like she has a slight droop but it's hard to tell. Either way, I think she's lovely. Whatever the reason for her expression, it makes me sad though :( She looks so sad, like she's about to cry... I hope that wasn't the case and was more a sign of the times or something else.
