Oiran were courtesans in Japan.  The oiran were considered a type of yūjo "woman of pleasure" or prostitute.  However, they are distinguished from the yūjo in that they were entertainers, and many became celebrities of their times outside the pleasure districts. Beautiful picts.

I couldn't help but notice the platform shoes that the woman is wearing in the second pict. It must have been really difficult to walk in those.

This is from a movie, but it shows the way they walked in those shoes, in a figure 8 almost.
Everyone in the procession walked in time to her.
