Back then, you had to stand still for like 20 minutes to get a clear picture. Not easy to maintain a smile that long, so most people didn't bother to try.
Not hours, at all. Probably, around forty minutes. I used to have a hair that long when I was er.. let's say, at her age :) Those curls, as I guess, were not made with heated irons, but with paper bands, used on a wet hair and left for a night to dry on at her sleep. The secret with keeping long hair in proper order is in keeping it well combed all the time, using any free minute to have an additional brush here and there.
I had to give up eventually, but I still miss my hair greatly. Something deep about the symbolism of virility, wildness, freedom, aggression, masculinity and all that :)
