1880s. First Communion

I am guessing this is a First Communion photo for this little girl.  Her hat gives the illusion of a halo around her head.  Very appropriate.

Looking at those eyes, particularly, I can tell you that child grew up to be a stunningly beautiful woman.

[She may not have stayed that way, though, given the conditions of the time - indeed, sometimes the eyes are all that remain.]

What are your clues that the photo is from the 1880s? I'm curious because I'm interested in both antique photos and the history of costume.

Tanfouk: Before 1890, at least in USA, cabinet cards had rounded corners. After 1890, they were square.

Thanks, every scrap of info I get is helpful. I'm going to have to find some good books to help me out. I've already got a fairly good feel for dates because of my experience with dressing antique dolls, but doll fashions did not track exactly with human attire.

the city listed is in hungary. i don't think that's a communion outfit, as they tend to be white dresses with a veil (my parents made me take my first communion), but i haven't been able to place it. it reminds me of a st lucia costume, but that's sweden.

It is the white ribbons that suggest First Communion to me. I've seen lots of First Communion photos of boys with a large white ribbon tied around their arm. As you said, girls usually have white dresses with a veil. I don't know what the custom is in Hungary. Can anyone confirm what this photo might represent?

I just get the impression that she would be holding a rosary and prayer book in her hands instead of flowers if this were a First Communion picture. Also, the headpiece would be more of a veil.
Whatever the occasion, it is an arresting picture.
