Ladies, I need your advice: I'm about to get a haircut tomorrow, my hair is now quite long , not layered. I've also managed to grow out my beatnik bangs, and, when I don't do any vintage updo, it just makes me look like a cavegirl....so I was planning to trim it a bit..like this ( Read more... )

as a hairdresser working in japan, one thing i can definitely say is that a cut like the one above is best if you have very thick hair...japanese people have so much volume and thickness, cutting it in such a way works whether curled or straight, but for most western hair, it ends up being a flat, lifeless mass. you have to have a lot of volume to get a style like that to work.

being white and working with japanese hair means i am full of envy :/ SO MUCH HAIR and they don't want it...my hair all pushed into a ponytail is about the same as maybe 1/8th of the volume of their hair.

however! if you did the cut so it had more volume in the length, you would be ok i think [although i can't say for sure because i haven't seen what your hair looks like].

I think this hairstyle will work fine with your vintage hairstyles! You might want to take in a picture that the hair isn't curled though... as long as your hair isn't thin and as long as they don't layer your hair TOO much... you will be able to do vintage hairstyles, yet you will enjoy your hair down as well.

I know what you mean about Japanese hair, Kay, that side of my heritage came through and my hair is crazy thick! ^.^

Not a hair dresser and not Japanese, but living here, I'd also warn that this cut is probably layered waaaay more than it looks.
When cuts like these are done well, they can look really cute, but even on Japanese girls, they often end up looking mullet-y, when left straight in particular.

I don't see why you couldn't do something similar to this WITHOUT doing that dramatic a cut, btw. Japanese hair can end up sadako-y when it's just straight, hence the layering. But if you're like me and have super fine hair, then just gently curling hair which is in a mild v shape (longest in the back, slightly shorter in front) ends up pretty similar, and all you need is bangs.

i agree with this comment...

of course, i wasn't trying to imply that something similar wasn't possible, just that a style of that sort with very small amounts of hair left long and lots of volume on top on western hair would probably leave lifeless hair and/or mushroom head when not styled... :)

Uck, I can just imagine that happening ... Nightmares of natto like strings of baby fine hair extending from a rat-nest covering my head. No thank you! I do have hair-envy though, sigh ... so many cute cuts, such a strong cut phobia!

But yes, I didn't mean to imply to that you were implying that either, haha.
