If you see in your 1951 version something called Half Hour Emergency Cake, you might like it better. It's a chocolate cake with a chocolate icing you pour over the hot cake. It's yummy good, too!
I think "rich" in 1951 wasn't as rich as it is today. Coming out of the war economy, tastebuds were satisfied with less flavor than we are today.
The classic Joy does have a brownie recipe, but I only use about half the butter it calls for. The first time I made it, I was horrified that I could see the molten butter bubbling up through the batter as it baked. Greasy! This recipe seems pretty buttery, too, though it does not use melted butter as most true brownies do.
