I had not heard that about the flame going out. The fact that it's not really the Olympic flame pretty much officially illegitimizes (a word?) the whole thing for me.

i figured it wouldn't be all over main stream media, that's why i provided the guardian link! yeah, a CIGARETTE LIGHTER! how disrespectful---but those olympics are anyway.....the IOC and Russians have seen to that!

the thing is, they are supposed to be carrying a secondary flame IN A LANTERN for just such occasions, and relight from there should the flame go out.

obviously in russia, it doesn't matter.
