Maybe it was some sort of temperance test? It's hard to tell whether the "refreshments" are food or drinks. I can't tell if he's suggesting they go to a bar or a restaurant. Perhaps a lady worth marrying would decline an offer of alcohol or she would decline an offer of food to keep her figure. I dunno. Either way, I am not the type to decline refreshments and I can't play the piano so I guess I never would have gotten married.
