Pride

I never told my little anecdote from last year's pride parade, did I? I was paging through the incredibly hot nekkidbirls community yesterday, and pictures of an FTM there reminded me of it ( Read more... )

A friend of mine had her vision fast last summer and her sister was there; her sister who had only recently had the surgery to go MTF. I remember having a mirror reaction to the one you've just described. We'd be in the sweat lodge, and occasionally my eyes would pass and see how the linen sweat dress she wore was clinging to her skin. Beautiful, fragile, new breasts. Given the context of ceremony, I'd quickly look away, though, to honor each person's privacy of prayer space as I do, but it stayed with me as an unquantifiable moment of beauty.

And...I don't often have call to mention this, but right now seems like a perfect time, so here goes: at the Code Pink rally in DC three years ago, rallying in the Ellipse, clear eyeshot from the Washington monument, I let the top of my dress down so my grrrls could get some fresh air for once. Not often I get to do that in public, and yeah, it was powerful.

It's been legal for women to go topless in Ontario on hot days for a few years, since at latest 1999, and I still haven't seen it once. Not because I'm hoping to ogle--I can ogle even with clothes on, thank you--but I find it interesting that even on hot days the social stigma still applies. In fact, if you look at pages like this one (http://www.realwomenca.com/newsletter/1999_March_April/article_8.html) you can see the arguments in the other direction.

I lie: I have once discreetly averted my gaze while a woman changed shirts in public, so I guess I've been there.

i love dyke march because anyone can go topless, since you're in a big crowd and it's kind of protective of you.

there was actually once a small protest in union square last summer by women who opposed the topless double standard. a lot of times, breastfeeding mothers will join that cause because they can get ticketed or even arrested for showing the goods in public, even if it's for a fairly utilitarian purpose like oh, nurturing their baby.

As you well know, I believe that women should be able to bare breasts in public...some countries have it-- a matter of fact attitude towards naked breasts--even among the fundies.
