Cultural musings

The TudorsDisclaimer: I'm a ardent Ricardian, and am therefore biased against the Tudors. I also think Jonathan Rhys Myers has creepy fish lips ( Read more... )

*chuckle* Hail to a fellow Ricardian!

I quite like most of the Tudors and their adherents, at least to read about, and Elizabeth I has always been a favorite. It's Henry VII I cannot stand! Not a shred of a valid claim to the throne, and he turned out to be a boring old fart, besides. Plus, I suspect he made poor Elizabeth of York miserable, and I'm not altogether sure he was innocent of her brothers' blood.

But I will admit to a LOT of bitching about the current revival of interest in 16th century England, especially as most of it features both Very Bad History and very bad tv/film-making.

The War of the Roses would be great, except you just KNOW that that they'd get it so very wrong. *sigh* And Elizabeth Woodville, that incredible beauty with the silver-gilt hair, would prolly be played by a Jessica Simpson clone - or worse!

Oh, dear - am I waxing cynical again? ;)

Oddly enough, I just read a book today arguing that it was Henry VII and not Richard who killed the young princes. Someday, if I'm feeling ambitious, maybe I'll go back and evaluate the evidence myself.

You're talking about Tanya Huff's Bloodlines series? What didn't appeal to you about it?

Do you not like the Charlaine Harris Sookie Stackhouse novels?

Have you tried the Keri Arthurs series, yet, which begins with FULL MOON RISING? Very fast paced, half-werewolf, half-vampire, set in Melbourne, very interesting polyamory werewolf stuff.

(Same editor as Armstrong, FWIW.)

Kelly Armstrong has a new non-supernatural series, FYI, which starts with EXIT STRATEGY.

Have you tried Rachel Caine's YA vampire series?
