I've been reading the comments on the Guardian's story about Matt Smith being cast as the 11th Doctor. It's surprising how prejudiced people are about young people. I happen to quite like this new Doctor - after all, the Doctor is 900+ years old, so no actor is of 'sufficient age/experience' to adequately play him. But this is because I am an ( Read more... )

They're prejudiced about old people too though! My one concern would be that they'd be repeating themselves if the new guy is to Tenant as Tenant was to previous doctors, but frankly they've barely put a foot wrong so far and it's definitely a completely unexpected choice. And will work very well if the new guy is indeed a different, brooding type. So I'm optimistic too, though I guess we have a long wait to find out. I was optimistic about Daniel Craig too even when everyone said he would be a shit Bond.

The 'too young' thing perplexes me. Part of the Doctor's character is an almost childlike fascination and joy at the universe and all the possible novel experiences it contains. Yes, he has emotional baggage, but youth is no bar to horror and regret and mental damage and loneliness (war veterans come to mind).

What I wonder about is how he can be different to Tennant. And I do agree with Tim's comment.
