its very hard to concentrate on reading french philosphy when there's hail pounding at your doors and windows like a giant rain-stick, and the wind whooing and roaring round the chimney like some angry deep-voiced animal. Ooh, I'd like to know more about home theory, what with creating one at the moment. Agree on the strong weather thing though, it's that feeling that the walls are protecting you, that significant difference between inside and out. Did WW write about his houses?

ooh its very interesting; I've been reading Bachelard's 'Poetics of Space' this week - its on a 7 day pop. lone, so I'm battling Chronos to get it computed before I have to give it back. Also, the intros and first ten pages have fallen out in a clump and are sitting forlornly under the square table, so I'm even more worried than usual about getting it back in time. He writes a lot in it about storms/shelter, nesting, shells, inside/outside, house/universe and wardrobes. ? . French men!

WW wrote loads about his house, specially DC. Arguably one of the most pivotal moments of his life is that captured in the LOOOOONG poem 'Home at Grasmere', all about moving into DC. Which was the first settled home he and dot ever had, since the family was split up and moved about when they were all very young. So he develops this thing, about DC (and grasmere) being not just his and d's home, but home for their brother John too, 'his quiet heart's delicious home', even though John never lived there. DC becomes Home then for WW, even though they only ( ... )

oh, and hope both you and harley get better very soon. Not a nice thing! (but never mind france; the weather's awful right now. Better to be - AT HOME
