While Ohno and Nino were riding the roller-coaster, Aiba and Sakurai went together to the café and sat at an empty table. A waitress came and they ordered, then stayed silent for a while. Aiba was looking around while Sho was staring at him. He didn’t know when it happened but he completely fell in love with that strange guy who was always cheerful but with a hidden sadness. And right now he could see that sadness in Aiba’s eyes. He was looking around but surely his mind was somewhere else. Maybe he was thinking of his ex-boyfriend or maybe about his debts…who knows? Sakurai couldn’t help but feeling angry at that man who hurt Aiba-chan and promised to himself to find him and make him put right his behavior. The drinks arrived and they just thanked the waitress then the silence fell again. Aiba was trying to ignore the lawyer, he didn’t want to look funny or pleased just to let Sakurai enjoy the date. He was still hurt by Sakurai’s behavior and he couldn’t help but think that a stupid man like him wasn’t worthy to be with someone like Sakurai. EEHH?!?!?! How could he think something like that?! Of course he’d never accept the date if Nino wasn’t involved…but was that the truth? Did he really feel nothing for Sakurai Sho? Maybe Nino was right! Maybe he was already in love without knowing!
“Iie, I don’t love him!”
“Who don’t you love?”
“Eh?! You read my mind!”
“You spoke your thoughts.”
“Ah! Again! Gomen.”
“Oh…is it a habit?"
“Sometimes…” Aiba murmured.
“Aiba-chaaan~ why are you so boring today? It’s your work to let me enjoy my time.”
“My work? You're not paying me today.”
“But you are a host. You must have entertainment in your blood.”
“Aren’t you the one who said I don’t fit this job?”
“Well…you’re right.”
“In addition today is my day-off. I just wanted to relax and release some stress but I’m here wasting my time.”
“Aiba-chan, you’re mean. I just wanted to have fun with you today.”
“That’s why you didn’t let me ride the roller-coaster?”
“Mmm…” Sakurai thought for a while staring at his drink, thinking of what he should do to make Aiba a bit happy. He hated behaving cold-heartedly so much, but it couldn’t be helped. It was his role. His work made him the way he is now; mistrusting everyone and never shows his feelings. When he looked at Aiba, his heart started to beat faster. The host was staring blankly at his right, lost in his thoughts, bringing the glass to his lips from time to time.
“WHUAA! KAWAII!!”
Sakurai jumped from his chair.
“Ne~ Sakurai-san, where can I find that tiger?”
Aiba asked pointing at a little stuffed animal held by a little kid.
“I think they sell it in some shop here in the park.”
“Hontou?? I want it!!”
“Why are you so hyper? It’s just a toy.”
“But it’s too cute! And I love tigers!”
Sakurai couldn’t resist Aiba’s pouting face and said:
“Ikou.”
“Where?”
“To look for your tiger”.
“Yeeeeyyy! Ikou!”
Aiba’s tension went up and he immediately rushed out of the café waiting for Sakurai who was paying for their drinks.
“Hurry up!”
“How come you changed your mood in some seconds?”
“Where do we start?”
“Look, there’s a shop” said Sakurai, pointing at a sign, “We can start from there.”
The two went in the shop and began to look for the stuffed toy but without results. Sakurai went to ask the cashier who said there was a shop in the center of the park who sold just stuffed toys. They went to look for that shop, talking about stupid stuff.
“What’s your favorite movie?”
“Mmmm…I don’t have a favorite movie but I recently watched Yatterman and it was funny.”
“Hontou?”
“Hai. I don’t know the protagonist so I guess he’s not so famous, but you know? He looks exactly like you!”
“Eh? It’s impossible. There’s just one Sakurai Sho in this world.”
“What a narcissist.”
“Mine is Letters from Iwo Jima. It’s really moving, right?”
“I don’t know, I tried to watch it with Nino once, but I fell asleep in the first ten minutes.”
“You’re helpless. What about books?”
“I don’t like reading. I prefer sports. When I was in Chiba, in my free time I always went to the beach to have fun. I really love surfing and stuff like that. It’s funny and you feel like flying. Well, actually I’m not so good at surfing but I really like it and…ah! Gomen!”
“Nande?”
“I’m talking too much.”
“Iie, it’s funny listening to you.”
“It’s okay. I know I’m a nuisance sometimes. Masahiro always told me that.”
“Masahiro?”
“Ah, don’t mind. It’s just a guy I used to know.”
Suddenly a shadow of sadness fell on Aiba’s face and Sho, noticing, tried to cheer him up but all he could think of was food.
“Ne~ Aiba-chan…what do you like to eat the most in this world?”
“Mabo-tofu.”
“Eh?! Hontou?”
“Hai! Actually my family owns a Chinese restaurant in Chiba and I really miss their cooking.”
“Jaa~ when we find your tiger, how about we have dinner in a Chinese restaurant?”
“It’s a great idea! I’m starving! Ah…gomen, I can’t!”
“Nande?”
“Betsunii…but I don’t have enough money for a Chinese Restaurant.”
“Don’t worry, it’s my treat.”
“Yada.”
“Don’t be so stubborn.”
“Jaa~ how about an home-made dinner?”
“What?”
“I will cook for you. I’m not a great chef but at least I know how to cook something edible.”
“Ok, I’ll ask Ohno-san if they’ll come.”
Sakurai tried to call Satoshi on his mobile phone but he didn’t answer. Lucky, I’ll be alone with Aiba-chan!
“Aiba-chan?? Where has he gone?”
Sho looked around but didn’t find Aiba anywhere and started to panic. That baka!
“Aiba-chan?” he began calling him but nobody replied. His heart was beating faster and faster every step he took to look for him. He was so worried that he was startled when his mobile phone rang.
“Moshi-moshi?”
“Sakurai-san…”
“Aiba-chan! Where are you?”
“Gomen…can I ask you to go home for today?”
He was speaking in a whisper and his tone seemed really scared.
“Daijoubu? Tell me where you are. I’ll come to pick you up.”
“It’s okay. I just need you to go home.”
“Nande?”
“Onegai.”
Sho felt that Aiba was begging him from the other side of the line and thought to do what he was asking for, but at that moment a strange feeling that he would never see Aiba again darkened his heart.
“Onegai, Sakurai-san…”
“Ok, I’ll leave. I don’t know what you’re up to but I’ll wait at my home for an explanation…tonight”.
“Arigato, Sakurai-san.”
Sho was really worried because of Aiba’s behavior but decided to follow his request and went back home. On his way he finally found the shop they were looking for and the “wished” tiger. A sad smile appeared on Sho’s lips. Aiba-chan would really be happy to see it, he thought.
“Yeah, he will really be happy!” he said then went in the shop.
~°~°~°~°~°~°~
It was already late when Sakurai’s mobile rang.
“Aiba-chan, what’s up?”
“A no~ Sakurai-san, I’m lost.”
“Eh?”
“I think I’m near your house but I can’t find the right building.”
“Matte, I’ll be right down!”
Sho ended the call and rushed to the main entrance and right there he saw Aiba waving and running toward him.
“Gomen, Sakurai-san! I couldn’t remember well where you live.”
The lawyer looked at him feeling relieved and before the host could ask what was the matter, Sho hugged him.
“Sakurai-san…?”
“Don’t you dare make me worry anymore.”
“Gomen, I won’t.”
Sakurai tightened the hug and Aiba made an expression of pain murmuring: “Itai…”
“Ah! Gomen!”
“Iie, daijoubu.”
Sho let him go and asked if he was hungry.
“Hai! I’m starving!”
They went in the apartment and Aiba found out that Sakurai ordered Chinese food and waited for him to eat. They sat at the table and began to eat peacefully talking about trivial stuff.
“Aiba-chan, do you want to take off your jacket?”
“Iie, it’s okay”.
Then Aiba offered to clean the dishes and Sho went to watch TV in the living room. When the host joined him, Sho turned off the TV and finally asked what happened in the afternoon.
“Nothing” Aiba looked away, “I just met a childhood friend of mine and we went to drink something together.”
“Don’t lie to me, Aiba-chan.”
“If you don’t want me to lie, then don’t ask.”
“I have the right to know. You left me alone in the middle of a date without reasons.”
“It wasn’t a real date in the first place.”
“IT WAS! I really wished to have fun with you this afternoon! And I was really worried when you disappeared!”
Aiba got up without saying anything thereby Sho grabbed his shoulder to stop him but Aiba cried out “ITAI!” and Sho let him go.
“Gomen.”
“Daijobu.”
Sho thought something was strange and grabbed again Aiba’s shoulder. The host moaned from the pain and pushed away Sakurai’s hand. The lawyer made him sit down and looking straight into his eyes asked again:
“What happened?”
“Nothing.”
Then he stripped Aiba’s jacket without asking and found a bandage on his arm.
“You just had a drink with a friend, right? Then how about your arm?”
Aiba kept on repeating that nothing happened, trying not to look into Sakurai’s eyes. He was about to cry but held back his tears. He didn’t want to involve Sho in his problems.
“You have nothing to do with it, so just think nothing happened. I fell, you can think I just fell.”
“Do you think I’m that stupid? Onegai, Aiba-chan, tell me who did this to you.”
“Iie.”
“Why don’t you trust me?”
“It’s not a matter of trust. I just don’t want to drag you into my messy life. It’s my problem; I’ll deal with it alone.”
Sho looked at that sad expression and felt his heart break into a thousand pieces. He hugged Aiba tight and caressed his hair.
“It’s okay if you don’t want to let me know, but don’t think you’re alone. I really wish I could be of some help to you so don’t let me out of your messy life, Aiba-chan”.
Aiba hugged Sakurai back and finally let his tears fall. They stayed there until Masaki fell asleep and Sho carried him to his bed. He lied next to him watching Aiba’s peaceful face in his sleep and caressed his cheek, wiping his tears.
“Arigatou, Sakurai-san…” murmured Aiba in his sleep. That night those words were for Sho the best ones in the whole world and he fell asleep smiling satisfied.
