Chapter 24: Otou-san part 2
Noriko watched as Yori walked over to help a fallen Aiba. They’d arrived to see Aiba get hit in the head. Yori was careful of their swinging son as she moved Aiba a bit away and placed his head on her knees.
She shook her head and lightly touched the tender spot where he was hit. Yori moved her head down and kissed his head, her hair falling to one side as she smiled down at her husband. She then leant down once more and kissed his lips. When she pulled away she brushed his hair and sighed.
Noriko then looked at Mizumi who stood next to her. They were both standing under a tree. They’d brought a picnic lunch and a blanket. Mizumi was looking up at the slide grinning.
Ohno and Rika were at the top looking down at them. Rika was sitting happily on Ohno’s lap and he used her right arm to wave at Mizumi. Who giggled and waved back. Rika’s happy giggle was loud as she got to the bottom of the side.
Ohno was smiling as he held Rika he then bent his head low and Rika smiled before hopping off of Ohno’s lap and running over to Mizumi.
“Okaa-san!” Rika said happily hugging her leg. “Otou-san said when I saw you I was to say…A…Ai…shite…ru.” Rika nodded grinning, “Ai…shite…ru!”
Noriko looked down at little Rika and smiled, “Ah…K-Kawaii!” she said looking away and wishing she had a little girl.
Mizumi laughed and picked her up, “Aishiteru Ri-chan!” she said walking over to Ohno and kissing him on the forehead.
Noriko could hear Mizumi’s words in her head. ‘You put our cute little daughter up to this…’ she smiled and looked around for Junji. She didn’t see him so she walked around the playground were the jungle gym was, and saw him dangling from the monkey bars with Sho holding him up.
‘Nani…’ Noriko thought with a confused face and walked closer.
“Do you want me to let you go now?” Sho asked softly as he held Junji who was hanging on to one bar.
“Iie…” He said, “I’m…I’m scared.” He said simply.
“It’ll be okay Ji-chan, I’ll move with you and if you feel like you need to fall I promise I’ll catch you.” Sho said softly.
Junji made a scared face before turning determined, “Okay…you can let me go.”
“I’ll be right here.” Sho said, “Grab on tightly now.”
Junji held on to the bar with both of his hands and then held on for dear life as he felt Sho release him.
Junji dangled for a while unmoving, when Sho stood back a bit.
“Come on Ji-chan you can do it!” He yelled encouragingly.
Sighing once Junji started to swing his body a bit and he reached out and grabbed the other bar in front of him with his right hand.
“There you go Junji! You can do it!” Sho yelled smiling.
Junji grinned and moved a bit he felt he could do it, he swung his body once more and reached out with his left hand but he felt his grip slip from the bar.
‘Iie.’ Junji thought as he fell.
Noriko saw Junji about to fall and rushed forward, but of course Sho got there first catching him before he hit the ground.
Noriko breathed out, she didn’t even know she was holding her breath. She heard Junji crying and she started to walk toward him again when Sho’s voice stopped her.
“Don’t cry Ji-chan.” He said consoling him, “You did very well.”
“De-demo…I…I…I couldn’t do it.” He said wiping his eyes and looking up at Sho.
Sho bent down on one knee and pulled him closer wiping his eyes.
“Iie…You tried and failed beautifully.” Sho said smiling, “I’m very proud of you.”
“De-demo…” Junji started once more and Sho hushed him.
“Iie Demo. You tired Ji-chan, and you trying even when you were scared made it worth it.” Sho said, “In life you will fail a lot of times, demo you take small victories in that frailer. You were brave in trying something you’ve never done before.”
Junji wiped his eyes and looked up at Sho in wonder.
“Don’t ever be sad to fail. Because it teaches you thinks, like…how to be brave, and how to grip on tighter to the next bar and to trust someone will be there to catch you when you fall.” Sho said, rubbing his head and smiling, “Okay, so no more tears.”
Junji wiped his eyes once more and hugged Sho.
“Domo Otou-san.” Junji said wrapping his arms around Sho’s neck.
Sho stood there stunned, ‘Otousan…’ he thought his heart lifted at the word. Sho had always wanted to be a father, and helping Junji…hearing otousan from him. He felt tears in his eyes.
“OKAASAN!” Junji yelled pushing away from Sho and rushing over to Noriko.
Noriko stood there unsure of what to do. She’d heard it too. ‘Junji…you really do want a father so badly don’t you.’ She thought trying to put a happy face back on for him.
“Hey Hun…” she tried to swallow the lump in her throat. “Are you having fun?”
Junji nodded, “Hai! Sakurai-sensei came to the park with us today! and he was helping me with the monkey bars! I almost made it Okaa-san, I almost made it!” he said everything so happily.
If she hadn’t seen him crying she would’ve never known. She hugged Junji close, “I’m so proud of you Ji-chan, so very proud.”
Junji smiled. “Okaa-san.” Junji said in a low voice.
“Hai?” she asked giving him her full attention.
“Sakurai-sensei…is my Otou-san now.” He said proudly.
