I'm with you...not a fan of varigated yarn either. But for a buck...not a loss. And you know, lots of people like it so if it's a gift, I'm sure they'll like it.
I made a blanket with varigated once and it wasn't bad at all. But it was granny squares and I framed each sqare with solid black.

Don't worry about the size...baby clothes look super small but they still fit. Just make sure the neck has more room than anything...babies only have big heads.

Oh and you skills are totaly rockin. It took me much longer to attempt a sweater.
Bravo.

This sweater pattern is crazy easy - http://www.crochetme.com/Feb_Mar_2005/patt_baby_sweater.html

Maybe Jack needs one....Hmm.

And it buttons, so the head size isn't an issue!

That does look small, but what do I know?

I think it would look really cute in a solid color as I am also not a fan of the varigated yarn.

I picked up some plain red in the kind of yarn they suggested. So maybe that'll make a difference on the size of it, though I doubt it.

But the other yarn is fuzzier so it might look cuter.
