Saw The Dark Knight this past Friday with Big Bro. I'd just watched The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance with my dad earlier that evening (

I haven't seen The Dark Knight yet, but judging from the scores and scores of blindingly positive reviews I have to say I have a Very Bad Feeling about it, and I remember seeing the previews and thinking "this will take itself too seriously
( ... )
It does take itself way too seriously. If I may spoil a bit of Hellboy for you - no director would have Batman and Alfred get into a drunken duet of a Barry Manilow hit midway through the film (singing perfectly in-character, by the way). No, we need Angst, we need Darkness and Fake-Depth.
The cinema gods are not merciful. Because I guess it's trying to combine the storytelling instinct with the coldest blood of economics and marketing, and throw in Sturgeon's Law, and the really great stuff falls by the wayside. Reportedly, Jack Nicholson approached Ledger when he agreed to play the Joker and warned him, "You gotta be careful when you're playing the Joker. That role can take over your life. It nearly killed me."
And Academy Award nominations and awards have an awful tendency to be super symbolic, as opposed to recognizing performances. Therefore, a symbolic acknowledgment of comedy -- well, it's something.
By the way, you and I should get together sometime this summer.
Haven't seen the movie yet, but alksjdfalksjdf IS THAT ICON A SPRING AWAKENING REFERENCE. I AM SO RIDICULOUSLY FOND OF SPRING AWAKENING. God, why don't we live closer to each other? Between the musical theatre obsession and all the fandom stuff, we'd probably be best friends. |D
XDDDD I'd heard of Spring Awakening before, and then when I borrowed Sabrina's icon a few such songs leaked onto my computer - not many, but I fell in love with "The Dark I Know Well" and "Those You've Known." (So beautiful.)
Maaaaan. Dang you, continental united states! Oh well, at least we can come up with zany schemes for how to infiltrate each other's Quaker colleges. :D We really must thank Cecilia for introducing us. *nods in Cecilia's direction.*
Hee! Unfortunately, I never actually got to see the performance (which is a shame, because Jonathan Groff and Lea Michele had lovely chemistry in the video recordings on YouTube), but I downloaded the soundtrack. And yes, those are wonderful songs. ♥
Yes, we must find some way to see each other! Maybe we can go bother Cecilia up at Columbia at the same time. Easier for me than for you (Philly and the Main Line aren't too terribly far from New York), but probably our best bet.
Lea Michele! She's going to be in Les Miserables in concert at the Hollywood bowl! I don't know who she'll be (I expect Eponine), and I don't know if the concert will be televised (hmm, a website might help clear this up)... *dang you, google.*
Ooooh! A trip specially reserved for Bothering? I like it! I have a friend going to school in Staten Island, too, so I can bother two birds with one stone!
