And what of Balian's character, I agree with you on that. I think if they would've portrayed him straight away as the baron he really was, without this blacksmith part of the deal, his character would've been more difficult to approach. I mean for the majority of the viewers. ("So why's this nobleman all noble, huh?") Easier to relate to someone, who's had it worse than most of us.
I happen to know the real history of this period pretty well (I'm doing research on the Hospitaller Order) and yet (or because of it?) thoroughly enjoyed the movie. And not just because Orlando is jaw-droppingly gorgeous. Just so we're clear on that. ;)
Interesting. I only know bits and pieces of the history of the period, so could you recommend some book on the period, because after seeing the film, I'm interested to learn more.
Or I could, of course, reread Judith Tarr's Alamut and The Dagger and the Cross, plus the preceding trilogy, which are historical fantasys set in the same period. Very good ones, BTW.

Re: not much of anything. The Director's cut is going to be over an hour longer and I think those problems will be smoothed away.

BTW, I agree about the resemblance of his look in KoH to Vivek in Kisna, that someone on my f-list mentioned.
