I think Farah Mendlesohn made a good point when she said that DWJ has grown her own critics. There have been some critical works on her books in recent years, and quite a few of the contributors have been people who have grown up reading her works ( Read more... )

I think she started writing it as a novel in order to figure out the world and it's history for herself, but then noticed that she couldn't finish it (same thing with "Everard's Ride"), so it as left as a partial story. When the people who were organizing the con that published the collection asked her to provide some original work on a moments notice, she sent them those two unfinished stories.
