Lyrics and reading

I was doing the dishes and listening to Tank's first album at the same time, and I since I've been listening to quite a lot of music lately in languages that I don't understand (Chinese, Japanese, Hindi, Korean), I started thinking about the importance of lyrics for me. I thought that lyrics were really important to me. That is why I mostly listened to Finnish music, but now that I've started to enjoy cantopop and don't understand anything, I've noticed I'm paying more attention to the singer's voice, melody, instruments.. Now if only I could learn to listen to Finnish / English songs like that too!

I kept telling people I cared for lyrics and I do admit that occasionally I do - bad lyrics can turn me off certain songs, but then the tune/melody/vocals are usually also something I just can't get into. But lyrics can be vapid and I can still like the song if the music is really good. It just depends a lot.

It only bugs me if I have some catchy bit stuck in my head and I want to quote the lyrics but then they're like, REALLY stupid and I'd feel like an ass quoting them.

By the way, my new hobby is google-translating Tank lyrics. The translations are far from perfect but usually tell the gist of each song, just not the poetry of it all. Not surprisingly, most are love songs but some seem to have tons of meaning that the google trans doesn't get through, symbolism etc.
