Wait until you see Ryu's dad in Gokusen 2. In comparison, Shin's father gets the parent of the year award. I mean, he's horrid, yes, but there was the feeling that he had tried at some point. With Ryu's dad, it's more like he brought up this robot, then one day the robot made a few friends and started acting like a normal kid, and he decided that the boy was a horrible degenerate and becoming the scum of society.
Yes, Shin's father at least appeared to have tried, but he just doesn't understand Shin at all, and is too selfish and concerned about his own image to be able to connect with his son anymore. Can't wait to see Gokusen 2 :).
with Shin, it's played as he's always had trust/behavior issues and that he was consistently less and less controllable and his father finally just had no idea what to do and pretty much said "do what you want and i'll take care of the finances, as long as you don't cause trouble" but there's still at least a small feeling that he really does want to work things out, he just doesn't know how. He just wanted a normal kid who respected authority and looked up to him, but didn't know how to connect. Doesn't make things excusable, but at least you can see where he's coming from
