a gusset heel

Since last week or so I've been knitting on two new projects : a Fire Clapotis and some No Purl Monkeys for my mother. They have a twelve and an eleven row pattern repeat (respectively), so I've been doing about one pattern repeat on each project each night. I do the same thing you mention. I pick up a stitch or two. I usually choose a stitch a few rows down, and treat it as a dropped stitch, or I make one on the same row and knit it twisted (through the back loop). Then I decrease it. There's really no foolproof way that I've found to do it. Sometimes it looks really good and other times I still have a hole.

This gusset method that I've tried doesn't give me a hole that I can see so far. As to which one I prefer, I don't really know yet. Short row heels have always seemed very natural to me. However, the gusset method creates more room the the ankle, which is sometimes useful depending on the stitch pattern I'm using and how much it stretches.

These socks won't be for me so I won't be able to tell you how it wears either, but I'll probably be trying the gusset again on my next sock.
