I've been using Sony Vegas 7 (which I believe is a much earlier 'Pro' version), but I am looking to buy a version for my personal use. I have a friend visiting America this week who is happy to purchase me a copy of the software while there. The prices here are prohibitive here in Australia ( Read more... )

Sony have an excellent product comparison tool on their Sony Vegas page. I tried to post the link but the comm marked my comment as spam, so you'll need to browse to it yourself, sorry! The link is top left of the Sony Vegas product page at the Sony Creative Software site.

As you can see on there, Movie Studio gives you 20 video tracks, Pro is unlimited. I've been using Movie Studio for ten years, and I've only ever once needed something it couldn't do (where I wanted to mask out a network logo - you can't do masking in Movie Studio). But generally it's pretty full-featured for a hobbyist-level price range. You can also purchase some brilliant effects packages from New Blue FX which are compatible with Movie Studio as well as Pro. I'm really happy with it.
