I want to make a video but this video does not want to be made apparently. For reference, I am running windows 7 on a PC.

The first program I tried was Windows Live Movie Maker. I drag and drop my .avi (they're all .avi) file into the program. All it does is repeat the first frame hundreds of times. I zoomed out and pressed play. Thing wouldn't ( Read more... )

software: sony vegas studio, software: windows movie maker

I can't say what's wrong but I wanted to see if you were interested in a test run. I have Corel VideoStudio ProX4. If you want to upload one of the files that won't play properly to a file sharing site, such as sendspace, I'll download and and see if it plays properly in VS for me. That will at least let you know if it's your file that's the problem. I have Windows 7 also so I can test the file on Movie Maker as well. If you know the files are all right, I don't know what could be wrong. However if you want to test the files you're having problems with on your own computer, you could try Avidemux or MPEG Streamclip. Both will play video and audio, and allow you to trim and convert footage. I don't believe either will add titles though but it might help you as you work through what's going on.

I don't think it would work sending them because the only way I can clip them is with corel and the saved clip does not have audio. I will try those suggested programs, though. Thank you for the tips!

It's frustrating when stuff doesn't work! Good luck.

Yeah, see this is why I stopped making vids a long time ago. It just never seems to go right. Thanks for the luck, though! I'll need it!

I can't speak to the other 2 programs, but as a long-time user of WMM, the version that comes with Windows 7 (Windows Live Movie Maker) is the devil. Seriously. I was so appalled when I opened it.Thankfully, you can download the previous good version (Windows Movie Maker 2.6) and it works just great on Windows 7. The thing I love about WMM is its simplicity. It doesn't take a lot to run it, especially if you don't need anything fancy. (But after you install it, since the program is basic, it is also easy to add user-made XML customizations & add-ons. If you wanted to experiment.)

Windows Movie Maker 2.6 download:

(Even though the link says Vista, don't worry, it works on 7 as well.)

You have got to be kidding me. I downloaded this version and just tried it out. The audio works fine. The video doesn't show up. *bangs head against wall*

This sounds as a codec problem to me, but I'm not sure. Not a technical expert myself. Maybe you can find some help at here: Foolish Passion Forum or you can download a simple tool which can identify if a codec is missing to play any video/audio files correctly. You can download it from here: GSpot Codec Information Appliance/

If you want to try another video editing software, maybe you can try Magix Movie Edit Pro MX, it has also a free trial version: Magix free downloads/ I use an older version of this editor for years and it is easy to use. I use it with Vista, but the new version will run with W7 for sure. Just an idea. Good luck!

I didn't see your post until I'd done mine! I see you suggested the same site I've used for a good while. Great minds, eh? :) Honestly, these gals helped me quite a bit. I had an aspect ratio problem a few years ago and they walked me through fixing it.

I know I've found that most of my problems with audio/video, etc. turn out to be from the way I ripped my original source. And downloaded material almost always causes me problems so I avoid it.

I wanted to offer one more suggestion. I know whenever I've had problems, I've followed the tutorials on this site: http://fpvideos.proboards.com/index.cgi

I ripped my DVDs as per their instructions and used their step by step tutorials for my program. They work. Hopefully you will find some solutions or a new way of doing things here.

I'm on the wrong computer at the moment, but I have a free program that rips the sound off my video files as an mp3. I then chuck it on another line on Vegas and sync it to the video clips and it seems to work very well. Perhaps you can do something similar.

Vegas often knocks out the sound on files. I assume it's a codec thing, but trust me, if you mess with codecs too often you will stop being able to use avi files at all.
