WMM won't play .avi files?

For some reason my movie maker won't play video files. It seems to load fine and there are no error messages. It simply won't play. What could be causing this?

software: windows movie maker

It seems to me like a missing codec may cause this problem, but I'm not entirely sure about it. I don't use WMM in these days.

Yeah, it could be. WMM isn't the best by any stretch but none of the better programs work well on my laptop so it's pretty much all I've got to work with. =(

Do you have the DivX codec installed? I know a lot of people use codec packs but I've found just to play/work with .AVI files, the DivX codec is all I've needed.

Oddly enough, I very rarely get sound in my Sony Vegas Movie Studio with .AVI files but I always do with WMM (so I have to use WMM to render out any audio bits I want and import that into Movie Studio ;) ).

If this is something, though, that just recently happened, like you were able to use .AVI files fine and then they just stopped working, it's probably coming from a new program you've installed or an update of some sort that went on since the last time it worked until now. That's usually just a matter of trial and error and lots of Googling to try to figure out what the culprit is and how to work around it. ;)

Good luck! :D
