I have a song that I so want to use for a vid, and most of the lyrics go perfect with my subjects but a few of them don't. My question is a general one: how do you guys get around those lyrics that just don't quite fit?

all: music

I quite often butcher the song -- remove verses that don't work, or even cut verses in half and paste two halves together, if necessary. I'm getting increasingly shameless about it. :-)

Hi, thanks for commenting.

I can never cut a song together without it sounding like I cut it together LOL. There's some really talented vidders who can, but I'm not one of them. Any tips?

Um, well, I'm self-taught and haven't been doing it long, but I do my music editing in Sony Vegas (my vidding program). I use two audio tracks, and I try to match up similar places -- either just going into or coming out of the chorus, for example). Zoom in and match the beat as closely as possible, then crossfade the two tracks. Experiment with the length of the crossfade to see what works best.

Good luck! :-)

Work into a metaphor. That's what I usually do. :)

That suggestion does sound interesting, thank you for replying :)

I would usually try and default to one of the above methods. If it really doesn't work, though, I'm not above ignoring the lyric altogether and just slapping it to a clip that doesn't lyrically make sense. :D

Agreed on all points - you'd be suprised at how many people can forgive a vid for ignoring the lyrics and at how many people don't follow the lyrics well anyway.

Ditto that. I've been very lyric-focused in the past, but I've just (almost) finished a vid where I only loosely stuck to the theme of the lyric, and not worried about matching every line. I think as long as he clips that are pivotal to your overall point/narrative hit a good match, you can pretty much fudge the stuff in between with something generic :o)

So, lyrics that don't match is a bit more forgiving by the viewer then - say - bad coloring or transitioins?
