the wedding

The most remarkable thing about the wedding decorations: flowers peppered here and there, floating at shoulder height, big and lush like magnolias, with roots hanging down. The petals are glowing a soft ivory.

The least remarkable thing about the wedding decorations: the chairs, which are comfortable chairs and spaced evenly, rather a lot like chairs ought to be.

Things that are in between in their level of remarkableness: very many things. For instance....

Victor is making zero efforts to hide her scars, no makeup on them, letting them stand out stark against her white dress with their pinks and tans and swan-feather white, the cruel sweeps of color, a scar in the shape of a chemical formula, and the tattoo on her shoulderblade, because her dress is backless. Simple. A silver belt around her waist, a silver necklace with a bird charm hanging down her back. A circlet around her head with a teal stone, framed by silver bird wings.

This is Victor at her most beautiful, if you can ever call Victor beautiful, with her hair tamed into soft waves with silver stars pinned in. Her long, graceful neck.

She's being walked down the aisle by a gawky, British-sounding alien man with hair like a rooster, in a suit that's about as blue as a box, if you catch my drift.

Her guys are up there. James, in a teal tux with a black vest and bowtie. Cole mirroring him with a black tux and teal vest and a bowtie. They each have lilies in their jackets, the same sort of flower that's in Vic's bouquet.

Cole looks terribly professional, hair slicked back and James Bondesque.

James looks grudgingly presentable, rather like he started out with his hair slicked back, waited until no one was looking, and messed it up again, and then the gel dried, and really there's nothing to do about it. Silver bird cufflinks for James, and underneath Cole's lily there's a little bird charm, too.

When it's time for the vows, Victor says, "I never thought that I'd find one soulmate, much less two. Every single day I'm astounded that you love me back; I feel like I'm living in a miracle. For the first time ever I can imagine my future, and I'm so lucky to have you both in it."

"You're the first girl I ever kissed, and I want you to be my last," Cole says, reaching out for her hand. "I knew from the moment I met you that you were special, and now I know that I must be a special guy if you want to spend the rest of your life with me."

"If it weren't for you, I never would have learned how to be human," James says, having decided against a much lewder vow because it was vetoed by all participants.

The three of them do the ring exchangey thing, and then light a three-wicked candle with three of their own tapers.

As for the reception... right behind all of the chairs for the wedding itself, there are round tables where everyone has a little nameplate, there's a dance floor, food to be served for every possible dietary restriction from kosher to vegan, and cakes. Several different cakes, designed with abstract swirls, labeled for their flavors, from classic vanilla with buttercream to blargleberry, to cover all bases. The perks of having a chef in the family. The babies are in pretty yellow cotton sundresses that look like sunflowers, none of that scratchy material that people force kids into wearing at weddings. Place settings are more of those floating, glowing alien flowers, decorations are simple, and feel free to say hello.
