My Parents NCIS Ship War and Invitation to Archive of Our Own (AO3)

Sep 17, 2010 11:34

I was out to dinner with my parents on Wednesday and we started talking about NCIS. I don't really watch it regularly any more but my parents do. I told them there were a lot Abby's at DragonCon this year. My mom was said, "I like Abby a lot." (Which to me is very strange to hear, because my mom hated my friends in high school that were a little on ( Read more... )

My mom and I bet on ships (er--not the spaceships kind) on Star Trek: DS9. I won. :-D Parents shipping is cute.

Oh, I know. My dad was a very big Sam/Jack shipper. He hated Pete. He was really funny explaining the significance of 'fishing' to my mom during the end of Threads.

Shippy parents! Love it!

(And btw, I agree with your dad.)

Has anyone actually gotten reviews of their fic on AO3? I've gone over there to look around and not seen any. Not that I'm a comment whore, but it's just that there are a lot of fic archives on the web and I tend to base my decision of "Is it worth spending time uploading here vs other places?" based on my sense of the chances of it actually being read by anyone. And the only way I can judge, is if there are comments or not posted to people's stuff.

The only thing I've ever posted there has been my 2009 Yuletide fic. I keep thinking that I need to start posting my other stuff there as well, but I haven't gotten around to it ( ... )

No, not more than I was looking for. I was just curious and your experience is good information. I, like many, think the concept for AO3 is nice. But like anything, that's only going to go so far. Usability, features, level of traffic, interaction, etc are all just as important. Thanks!

I've heard that people don't tend to reply at AO3. I've seen, rather, frustration about it. A lot of it may simply be that people prefer commenting at LJ/DW.

If you still have an extra AO3 invite I would love to have it for a friend. She pulled her old stories from a different site and was interested in reposting them on AO3.
And as a reader, not a writer, I really like AO3 and wish more writers posted there. It think it's slipped under a lot of people's radar, but seems to be growing steadily. Thanks.

If you can message me your friend's email address, I'll send her the invitation.

Dawwwwwwwwww. Ship wars are a natural phenomenon, whether you're in fandom or not!

(And I'm siding with your dad. *g*)

People totally ship all the time whether they realize it or not. I remember a couple of years ago I was at a bar and these two hipster looking guys almost got into a knock-down-drag-out about House/Cuddy versus House/Cameron. Too funny, especially when the bartender broke in said it was totally House/Wilson.

Ha! Love your parents' shipping!

I side with your mom, but I know I'm a tiny minority. Some people find it squicky. But every now and then there's a little *something* there, though it used to be more frequent than it is now.

Hee!

I sorta ship Abby and Gibbs too, but I also it find a bit squicky. I wish she was more elegant goth than school girl goth. The pig tails and little plaid skirts she wears makes her look so young, even though she's not. If she didn't wear that all the time I would have an easier time shipping them.
