There were things that knew Ali's secrets. She didn't spill her heart and thoughts into a diary; that would be silly, because no matter how well she thought it might be hidden she knew it would be found. Jareth isn't too far off; he rarely is, during her visits, and greets her with a fond smile. "Did you rest well, my dear?"

Ali's smile is nearly instant when she turns away, in preparation for the inevitable questions. "Yes, of course. I always do."

After kissing the tip of his nose as she passes him to sit on the edge of the bed, she asks, "So how many fires did you have to put out so far this morning?"

"Only the one," he answers, after a moment enjoying that close contact, "although the day is young. Still," he concludes with high spirits, "he shall be hard-pressed to set fire to water and stone." A moment's consideration forces an admission: "the bucket, I suppose, he might light. I must have him use a copper one, next time."

Ali laughs at that as she pulls on her shoes (she's found she quite enjoys the feel of the cool slightly-rough stone under her feet, but she doesn't want to step in whatever messes the goblins make). "I think that might be best. Just to be on the safe side."
