Quick fingers grabbing the shelf keep Ali from teetering when she's surprised, though he does get a quick glance, and once she's steady again she finishes claiming her prize. "This," she answers, offering him the book as she relaxes onto her feet again.

"Books are never a burden."

"'Goblin Tales,'" he murmurs, studying the spine. "How lovely. Thank you for thinking of me."

He eyes her stack of books. "No? A pity--if they were, I might have offered to relieve you of a few, to lighten the rest." He can't get through the day without a little mischief.

Ali smiles, though his eying her books makes her clutch them a little closer. She doesn't say it, but the message is clear: mine. He can get his own books!

"I'm sure we can find all manner of way for you to amuse yourself here," she answers sweetly, before gasping. Wet dog nose in the back of her knee always makes her jump. "Yes, Casey, I know."

The giant dog moves around to sit beside her, watching Jareth in that inscrutable way guard dogs have. "Jareth, this is Casey. Casey, this is Jareth. Be nice." That last is directed at them both.
