Happy Halloween! (open post)

Oct 31, 2009 20:53

It's Halloween, and despite whatever troubles she's having, Ali cannot pass up a chance to play dress-up. Fortunately for her, she's in good company. Everyone's in costume, really, except for one particularly elusive cat. And there's candy and treats for all the kids (and not-kids-anymore) who come asking.

And other, sweeter things will come

Even Alfdis is in costume, for that is what one does on such a holiday. Grant me a top hat, and I'll be a little Baron Samedi.

Davyn's costume is a sheet. It's hard to tell whether he's supposed to be a ghost or a dinner table; put food on me and I'll show you!

Ali has a tiny top hat! Don't ask why. Just accept that it's there, Alfdis, and wear it with dignity. Even if it is still a bit too big for you and Ali has to sew on an elastic strap so it doesn't fall off.

Alfdis does everything with dignity. And in February, she suggests, it could be part of an Abraham Lincoln costume for Davyn.

"But Mister Lincoln was thin," Ali points out.

As good as his word, the Aztec god of sun, rain, and many other things has paid Ali a visit on this special night, lingering to ensure each visitor at the door receives the chocolate treat they love most--for those, at least, who can have chocolate.

How fortunate! Perhaps especially for the kids who figure it out and try visiting twice.

Doubly fortunate, for them!

It has been a cold October, and on that eve it gets a touch colder. A knock comes at Ali's Nexus door, with a voice she might know calling, "trick or treat!"

Hod is not left waiting long, though he doesn't get candy. Not right away. What he does get is a warm, almost-too tight, long hug from a very relieved Ali.

Hugs are grand things! Besides, when you've got Thor for a brother, your ribs become sturdy indeed. "Hi, Ali. How're you?"

"I-I'm fine." What other answer did he expect? If he'd been listening, he'd know the truth; if he doesn't know the truth, she's going to have to rethink this whole "faith in gods" thing. "What a nice surprise! Come in, you haven't met the twins yet."
