Rollercoaster Days: Food

Mar 01, 2009 18:36

Ali has been hard at work this afternoon, and the kitchen shows the signs: smudges of flour can be found on almost every surface, racks bearing cookies and candies and cupcakes are stacked as high as possible, the intermittent whirs and beeps of mixers and timers make a sort of music, and there's a distinctly yeasty smell in the air. Well, yeasty ( Read more... )

Hans is quite brave. He is also quite foolish. He is a very capable, clever man. But at times, he can also be quite stupid. This may well prove to be one of those times, as the strange smells draw his curiosity.

The sight of the kitchen is enough to make him pause. There is a chaos here he could not even have imagined. And more baking than he would have thought humanly possible.

But... "Ice cream and pickles, my love?" he asks.

The cookies are quite good and pit a genuine smile on Hans' face. "They are just perfect," he says.

"Is there anything here that I may help with?"

"Well...I have been craving Chinese today." Although she shouldn't need to, she gives him puppy-dog eyes anyway. It never hurts to be really certain.

"I would be happy to run out and get some," Hans tells her. "Or should we just order in?"

"Let's order in," she decides after a moment, and after wrapping her arms around him to give him a hug. (He's going to smell like pickles now. Poor man.)

"And thank you for humoring me about the toffee."

Pickle smell or not, Hans will never shy away from giving Ali a hug. Never.

"That sounds like a good idea," he agrees, before giving her a kiss. "And you are quite welcome."

Oh. Oh, Hans. Poor man.

Ali is in a much less huggy mood now. "You could have just told me you didn't like it," she huffs, retreating to a corner with her ice cream and pickles for comfort. "You didn't have to say you like it if you didn't."

Ooooh, scheisse.

"I... I..." he stutters. She had thanked him for it! Why was agreeing wrong?

Her gratitude, like some cakes, was a lie. A trap, intended to get him to admit the truth.

Now she's just glaring at him and eating her ice cream like it was the only thing between her and yelling. And she's running out of ice cream.

What a time for Sasha to glide in, carrying Amaris. Hans is saved! "And here we are in the kitchen again, darling. Oh, look, our noses were right! Mommy Ali has indeed been cooking," Sasha croons to her daughter, who looks all about with wide eyes. "And there is Hans, as well, hello Hans. Everything smells so lovely. Do you think she might share? Shall we ask her? Yes, that would be the only polite thing to do, we don't take without asking, no."

She turns a fond smile to Ali, setting a manila folder on a clear spot of counter while she adjusts her hold on Amaris. "What wonders have you concocted today, beloved? They called to me from my office, and I simply had to know."

Okay, so maybe Hans isn't quite saved.

"Hello Sasha, hello Amaris," Hans says, trying to sound cheerful in spite of impending doom.

"I... I am sorry," he says, after a moment.

All Hans gets out of Ali right now is a "hmph." Because she's busy turning great big wibblesad eyes on Sasha.

"Hans lied to me! He said he liked the toffee I made and he doesn't. He's so mean!" A couple of tears trickle down her cheeks, but she's making an effort to hold them back right now. "Amaris, when you grow up and get married, don't marry a liar."

"Oh, my poor darling!" Sasha is quick to open her arms (well, arm) to Ali, drawing her into a comforting embrace. Plus, baby. "Hans, for shame!"

Amaris burbles what might be assent, and tries to grab some pretty hair.

Hans is at a loss for how to handle this.

"You are right," he says after a moment. "I should have been honest."

"You should have," she wails from the vicinity of Sasha's shoulder. Amaris is allowed to grab all the pretty hair she wants, Ali doesn't care right now. She's too busy being upset, even if she does know it's a bit of an overreaction. That's not the point!

What is the point? Um...

...

She's pregnant. Why does she need a point?

"Shh, my love, shh," Sasha soothes, stroking Ali's back. "We shall see the balance set for his deceit, you have my word. But first, could you tell us of what you have made? The scent alone sang to me, as you know, and knowing that all was the work of your own lovely hands leads me to crave them all the more. Please?" Mayhap flattery and diversion can bring Ali back to a happier mood? And Ali gets her pleady eyes (and Amaris', too! She's picking up some tricks early).
