I don't get why it's so hard for them to understand. It's not personal, it's that they're refusing to let someone have a proper choice of how they identify. Some people might appreciate the "it's personal," sure, but people aren't always hiding or ashamed. It's kind of like LJ expects them to be, though.

Or maybe I'm just being too sensitive. I agree with your #4.
