JournalFen's FAQ on Syndication

*NOTE*
JournalFen is currently in the process of updating their syndication FAQ. As more information becomes available, I will update this page as necessary. The guideline here is based on what information is available and the similarities to the other LJ clones.

The Outgoing Feed
What types of accounts can have a feed?
All accounts have a feed.

You can find the RSS feed by adding '/data/rss/' to the end of the URL of a journal or community.
How long will JF entries display on their feed?
RSS feeds will only display the most recent 25 entries.

The Incoming Feed
Who can subscribe to a feed?
All accounts may subscribe to feeds, within the guidelines of their 'syndicated point' system, which I have outlined below.

Who can create a subsciption to a feed?
Basic paid and premium paid account users are able to create feeds within the guidelines of their 'syndicated point' system, which I have outlined below. Free accounts cannot create feeds.

How often is the subscription to the feed updated?
RSS feeds are updated once every 30 minutes.

The Syndicated Points
What are they?
To be blunt, they're confusing as hell. RSS feeds cost each user a certain amount of 'points,' and the points vary depending on how many people are subscribed to a feed.

How do they work?
A syndicated feed costs one point, split evenly among the users subscribed. If you are the only person watching a particular feed, it will cost you that full one point. However, if a second user subscribes, it will cost you each one-half of a point. If there are three subscribers, it will cost each subscriber one-third of a point. Make sense?

How many points do I get?
Free: Unknown
Basic Paid: 5
Premium Paid: 10

I don't know what I'm talking about.
This is my disclaimer for the point system. I've gotten most of this information from the FAQ on syndication points at InsaneJournal. JournalFen's syndication page has the same message concerning points as IJ. I've yet to receive a response if my deduction on how exactly points are split among subscribers is correct, or if this system is even still in place. I will update this section when I receive a response and find that I'm incorrect.

How to subscribe to a feed on JF
1. Go to JournalFen Syndication, located at http://www.journalfen.com/syn/.

2. Scroll down to the bottom of the page, where it says "Add Feed by URL." Enter the RSS feed URL and click 'Add Feed.'
REMINDER: You need the URL of the feed itself, not the URL of the website or blog you are attempting to subscribe to.

3. If a subscription to the feed you've entered has already been set up on JF, you will be directed to a page asking you if you would like to add that feed to your friends page. Click "add" to subscribe.

4. If the subscription to the feed you've entered has NOT been set up on JF, one will have to be created. You will be led to a page reading "Create Feed," where you will be asked to enter an account name to use for the feed. Choose an account name.
IMPORTANT: Do not use an account name with a screen name of a person you are attempting to add to your friends' list, as this will block the use of that name on JournalFen. Thanks for the warning goes to stewardess, who recommends this: "Always create RSS feeds with a prefix or suffix such as "ij_stewardess" or "stewardess_rss" and so on." See this post for more information.

5. After the account name has been entered, click "create feed," where you will once again be prompted to subscribe to the feed. Click 'add' to subscribe.

About creating feeds:
1. Expect a delay just after you've created a feed.

2. When a feed is first created and the delay has passed, you will see the maximum amount that of posts that feed allows right away on yours friends' list. It's usually either two weeks' worth or the last 25 entries, but it varies. It's a little bit annoying on that first update, but all future updates will appear as normal on your friends' list.

If you've read this and you're still confused, please read 'The Basics of RSS and Live Journal (and the LJ clones)' before asking questions.
