Livejournal Strikethrough 2007 - Action Resources

May 30, 2007 08:33

Edited so many freaking times, and probably will continue to be edited. I'm trying to collect resources on what action we can take, so please comment with anything I might be missing. I will continue adding to this as more are found.
(On that note - pimping helps, too. The more resources we have, the better. Right now, they're scarce.)

Since there are members of my flist that aren't a part of fandom, I'd like to point out that lolita07 was among the suspended journals. This was a community that was made for reading and discussing the Nabokov novel, not a community dedicated to kiddie porn. Effing morons.

So, now that we've been running around all night screaming "ZOMG, THE END IS SO FUCKING NIGH!," what do we do?

  • bookshop has a terrific post here that gives us MANY suggestions on what we can do.

I'd love to quote the whole damn thing, but for now I'll just pick this:

We, and by we I mean all of fandom - everyone from Harry Potter to anime fandoms lost dear people and communities today - have got to come together and create, not only a viable concerted means of combatting what happened today on livejournal, but any future attempts by those outside of fandom to try to tell us what fandom is or isn't. How many times have you all read some horrible write up of a fandom meetup in the Guardian or Newsweek where fans were represented as off-kilter extremists with subversive porn fetishes?

Not any more. We have got to create a viable means whereby fandom has a representative voice within the larger public sphere, and we have got to, as individuals and collective units, stand up for ourselves at every opportunity.

  • Another great post by ancarett, suggesting calling Six Apart with our concerns.
I would just find it effing hilarious if everyone in fandom bombarded them with phone calls. That's not what I'm suggesting we do, but we'd definitely raise a stink about it. Heeee.

  • Demand that LJ address the issue. Be polite about it, as it is not LJ Abuse that is responsible for this. I am, however, a little offended that LJ hasn't said ANYTHING when it comes to what the hell is going on.

  • A poll on paid accounts - how much has fandom contributed monetarily to Livejournal? (PLEASE pimp this one, folks. The numbers here will say a lot. Also, check out fandompays.)

  • We have a petition started here. NUMBERS SPEAK.

  • Running discussion and advice on the sitution at fandom_lawyers. If nothing else, the comments are full of some good information.

  • bubble_blunder - What we can expect. This isn't so much a resource as it is a plea to the general fandom to prove her wrong.

  • roaring - A great list of resources. Some are doubling what you can see here, but there is also some new material.

innocence_jihad - See my thoughts below on this, but they're part of the action.

A few things that haven't been covered in the above posts: Going after Warriors of Innocence really isn't going to help. I agree that their methods leave something to be desired, but you have to keep a few things in mind:
  1. We don't have concrete proof that they are the group responsible for this. All we have is a lot of circumstantial evidence.
  2. The people responsible are located at Six Apart - from what little we've heard from LJ Abuse, it's Six Apart making this decision.
  3. Let's say we win the war against Warriors of Innocence. Who's to say Six Apart won't pull this again when some other vigilante group decides Livejournal is full of pedophiles?

Don't give Six Apart ANY money, period. I've never given one of those virtual gifts, but I suggest that we refrain from purchasing them at the moment.

I, for one, will not be purchasing a permanent account next month. I had planned to. If you have a plus account, switch to basic. If your paid account is about to expire, don't renew (*gasp*) until Six Apart does something to fix the damage they've caused.

bitching about lj again, lj alert
