Not sure if you've heard this, since Nicaragua doesn't exactly grab front-page headlines in the U.S., but there's been quite a mess going on; the U.S. State Department even put a travel warning on the country because of political violence.

A political party betraying its ideals in favor of the blind pursuit of absolute power? At least kind of thing could never happen in the United States!

That sucks. Nicaragua was just starting to repair its reputation and get its tourism business going. That is really really sucky.

The interesting question is, would Ortega and the Sandinistas have turned that direction long ago, had they been able to hold power?

I worry about my cynical belief that anyone fool enough to want to govern anything has no business being allowed to govern. And since I'm still basking in my Obama afterglow, I'm not ready to get back in touch with my inner cynic just yet.
