Stuff you guys totally needed to ever know about me (also, movies!)

Saw two awesome movies in the past few days. The first was Summer Wars, which was amazing and touching (I actually cried, which... doesn't happen often). Despite what people say, it really isn't all that similar to Our War Game, apart from the ideas of a rogue AI and impending missiles. It came off as more of a homage than anything. I'm actually ( Read more... )

*dumb, but thanks. ♥

And sure it will. I'll turn into a thirteen-year-old alien juggalo who cusses too much.

Hasn't the internet taught you anything? Every year is the year of the troll.

I saw Atlantis when it first came out, but I don't remember it. Think I should rewatch it sometime; I keep hearing good things about it, and Milo's a linguist? Heck yes.

Also whoops, reposting because resident genius didn't realise I was still retyping the meme in this window. Sorry about that.

Yes, you should definitely rewatch it! It is one of Disney's most forgotten movies and that's terrible. :( And yes, linguist/cartographer. (You know the whole thing about how they came up with the Atlantean language for the movie? I remember reading at the time about how much thought they put into it. I was 9 at the time and knew nothing about conlangs, but I thought that was pretty cool. :D)

Oh man, Atlantis. I remember when it came out on video and I got a DVD only to find out that it didn't play right in our DVD player (this was back in the early days of DVD) so I had to get the VHS. Which I still have, I think.

I also think I'll have to fill out that meme now too.

I have it on VHS too! Though in my case I bought it at the library a few months ago, and finally owning it was the reason I ended up watching it. But still. VHS buddies \o/

Been a while since I've seen Atlantis. I remember being kind of annoyed that both the story and visuals seemed to have been ripped off from Dinotopia: The World Beneath (I mean, I know they were based on the same legends, but I don't recall the legends involving crystal-powered robots and shit, so yeah...). I've also seen people point out too-close-for-comfort similarities to Nadia in terms of the presentation of the story, but it seems like it was actually more Disney trying to do their own take on Castle in the Sky (which was Miyazaki's response to a failed production that would later become Nadia, and Disney pulled the American release of Castle in the Sky around the time Atlantis started shaping up to be the movie it would end up being, and then years later Avatar would steal from parts of all of the above but made forgivable for its sheer grandness of filmmaking, and yeah, all these Jules Verne-inspired movie comparisons are making my head hurt now). So yeah, it's probably a good movie, and I remember liking Mike Mignona's design ( ... )

I know, and The Lion King ripped off Kimba. (And Hamlet.) Honestly, I know I'm a bad person, but I can't bring myself to be upset about that stuff. If it's a good movie, it's a good movie, y'know? Then again, my focus always ends up being on the characters, so I'm probably not the best person to talk.

The Lion King/Kimba thing didn't end up bothering me, mainly because I saw Lion King years before I knew a thing about the controversy, and when I did research it seems like The Lion King was actually in production as a remake of Kimba and Disney lost the rights but the movie was just too good so they changed it up to an "original" movie. Wish they'd publicly acknowledge the influence, though, since its so obviously there and to deny it makes them look more like plagiarists to the public rather than simply artists who play with their influences.

And they acknowledged Hamlet, and it's not even that Hamlet-esque. If it was, then Nala would go insane, Timon and Pumbaa would turn out to be spies for Scar, and Simba would confuse a hyena for Scar when he decided to start acting and it'd all go down from there. (That would be kind of awesome) Also, Scar would be straight and not all drama-queeny and would be hating on Simba for being a drama queen. (That would be less awesome)

Well, it's not an allegory. What's this about Scar being non-straight?
