Character Information

General
Canon Source: Homestuck
Canon Format: Webcomic
Character's Name: Kanaya Maryam
Character's Age: Six solar sweeps/13 human years
Conditional: If your character is 13 years of age or under, please clarify how they will be played. Kanaya is a member of an extremely violent and self-sufficient alien race, raised not by adult members of the society but by large monsters, referred to as a lusus. Even more so than the other trolls, Kanaya has grown up in isolation fending for herself- she lives in the middle of a large deserts and keeps odd daylight hours, which would possibly bring her into contact with ravenous undead to subdue (although she does avoid them; they're very dangerous). She's spent her life fending for herself, and inherited some very important duties essential to the propagation of her race, like the care of the matriorb, which will one day hatch into a new Mother Grub to help carry on the troll race. And in a pinch, she's extremely handy with a chainsaw.

In short, Kanaya, like the rest of her cohorts, has been looking after herself for most of her life, and wouldn't have survived if she weren't completely competent at it.

What form will your character's NV take? The lunchtop, a lunchbox-esque laptop device with a holographic screen and keyboard for typing. As illustrated on this page.

Abilities
Character's Canon Abilities: Like the rest of her species, it's likely that Kanaya is somewhat stronger and tougher than an ordinary human being. Her status as a greenblooded troll means she is likely to have a lifespan longer than that of a human, perhaps a couple of centuries or a little longer, although because her rare jade blood sets her apart outside of the hemospectrum, it may be significantly longer. Apart from that, she had no special psychic abilities or strength, and so far her transformation into a rainbow drinker has not explicitly revealed any new abilities. Just a need for blood (and possibly an increase in strength, as it's unclear whether or not she could send people flying with a single punch or kick before her transformation, but she definitely can afterward.)
Weapons: Kanaya's primary weapon is her lipstick, which alternates between the colors green and black, with bonus transformation into chainsaw when she needs a weapon.

History/Personality/Plans/etc.
Character History: Wiki link
Point in Canon: The end of Act Six Intermission One, when the trolls and Dave and Rose have united to travel through the Furthest Ring on their meteor.

Character Personality: Kanaya is a meddler. She'd classify it as helping, damn it, but to everyone else it's fussing and meddling as she sort of casually offers pointed no-nonsense advice and casually identifies the personality flaws of her closest friends. She proves herself insightful enough to notice that Karkat's paranoia and belief in a curse comes from his belief that the universe is constructed to personally fuck with him, and that Vriska would resent and reject her help if she tried to be direct about stopping her, and has no problem pointing that out to people. It's not done maliciously, as Kanaya only seems to feel that she's just trying to help and she has people's best interests at heart. However, Kanaya takes on herself some burdens that nobody asked her to take on and seems to act at times in a way that suggests that she provides her help whether or not it's been asked for, doing things for the greater good regardless of the feelings of the people involved- Tavros' amputation, for one, and clown hunting. But Kanaya is committed to helping, because that's her job, and help she will. It reaches the point where she's sought for help she doesn't want to provide; she's acknowledged to be the cast bicycle when it comes to auspiticing, which requires her to facilitate and mediate between two unstable parties that hate each other to keep their relationship functional and from becoming a romantic hate.

Unlike many of the other trolls, Kanaya is primarily calm, methodical, and deadpan. She speaks in a very carefully enunciated sentences with erudite vocabulary and unlike most of her friends is not prone to cursing, or fits of temper, which leaves her coming across as much more adult than the rest of them. She also seems to be lacking overt murderous tendencies, which makes her the odd one out as trolls are concerned. Most of her interests and habits deviate from the norm of troll society: she likes to go out during the day and decorate things and practices topiary and landscaping. She has an interest in fashion, which leads her to wear lipstick almost all the time and design multiple outfits for herself that cycle at random, so that she ends up fight ogres in an off the shoulder gown. As a jade-blooded troll she holds a unique position in being raised by a Mother Grub who has given up on her breeding duties to act as a parental figure, and as a result is responsible later for helping said Mother Grub. She's a more rational and less emotional person than a lot of her friends, despite her sometimes cutting and later sarcastic remarks, focusing in the majority on being supportive, rational, and realistic. For a troll, she's practically sweet, with her emphasis on doing her job and aiding people. She seems positively ordinary…except that she harbors secret fantasies about being a Rainbow Drinker (the troll version of vampires), from her sordid gothic literature, with a buried bloodlust and a desire for what she perceives as the passion, the romance, and the feast such an existence would bring her. She's more of a romantic than she seems, indulging in romantic fantasies about Rose and her session's imagined triumphs at Sburbs, with a healthy focus on their potential love lives, despite the practicality she puts forward towards others.

Despite her calm and unflappable demeanor, Kanaya does actually possess her own emotional and violent streak. She seems to try to be the more mature troll out of all her friends, but she is hardly as put together as she seems. She's terrible at her own lovelife, which causes her great heartbreak and leads to her inefficiently mediating between parties when her crush Vriska is involved and putting her in tears when she kisses somebody else. While she seems perfectly capable when she's handling other people's problems, it's clear that she doesn't really know how to handle her own. When she approaches, say, Karkat for advice in romance, she beats around the bush with it and she can't quite spit it out and ask for what she needs- his help. Sometimes she doesn't understand situations as well as she thinks she does, given the confusion attempting to troll the Rose Human led to. Her flights of fantasy about Rainbow Drinkers and other such "romantic" and dark lifestyles, as well as her speculation into the human's sessions when she discovered Rose's guide, suggest she's not quite so practical and down to earth as she usually makes herself out to be and secretly maybe longs to be dangerous herself. Her own good intentions end up biting her in the ass a few times- trying to help Vriska leads to Vriska completely failing to see her feelings leading to heartbreak for Kanaya. She's a terrible troll and seems far too sincere to actually pull it off very well, completely incompetent when she's unenthusiastic about what she's being asked to do (which is probably why she didn't manage to mediate between Tavros and Vriska as well, or manage to be as good as friend and calming partner to the dangerous, violent Vriska as she should have been, since she harbored not-so-secret feelings for her.)

Of course, she is dangerous, like most trolls, just in her own way. While she doesn't seem especially violent compared to others in the cast (who have explicit military ambitions or a vested interest in killing for various reasons), Kanaya has no problem with violence when the situation calls for it. Sh cuts open her lusus, her Grub-mom without a second thought to remove the Matriorb that would later allow her to hatch a new Mother Grub to continue the species. She expresses no remorse over chainsawing off Tavros' legs and doesn't even seem to be bothered by the fact that she was doing it in the first place. She fantasizes about drinking blood even before she died and came back to life as a Rainbow Drinker. Underneath her calm exterior it's entirely possible that she might be hiding a grim, violent, angry streak, especially post-death. When she returns from the dead, her first act is to chainsaw the troll who killed her in half, punch Vriska in the face and kick another troll in the nuts. Her response to finding Gamzee took the dead bodies of her friends is to immediately begin a clown hunt to track him down, with the not-so-subtle threat of her chainsaw. She drinks her friends' blood as a Rainbow Drinker without asking, although she is at least kind enough to put bandages on them. It's possible that as a vampire Kanaya may be more prone to acting on her violent urges, or giving in to violence without the previous categorization of pragmatic and necessary violence, but given the circumstances which led to her death and reanimation it is also entirely possible that she considers this new violence just as necessary as the previous iterations, even as she seems a bit more inclined to express her irritation more strongly than before. Dying and failing at your central task you were supposed to accomplish for your dead mother would probably make anyone a little edgy.

But vampire Kanaya is still Kanaya- still prone to rambling, still precise and a bit pointed in her speech, calm and practical on the surface, more emotional underneath. Still prone to wanting to help her friends and meddle, even though she seems less certain of herself given her failure with the Matriorb. Still Kanaya- just with a thirst for blood.

Character Plans: Kanaya is not the sort of person to join up with either of the corporations. It is also unlikely she would seek out a resistance group against them unless they took action against her friends. For the most part she'll just be assisting them, in whatever they need, and others as the case may be, without taking a side until that, too, becomes an issue of helping.

Appearance/PB: Ordinary Kanaya! As a Rainbow Drinker her skin becomes luminously white to the point of glowing and her eyes become more yellow, like so.

Kanaya had indulged herself from time to time in lurid fantasies of what she would do if she were a Rainbow Drinker before. Often. Much more often than she would ever care to admit to anyone, especially now that she had actually become one. She had visions of herself flitting through the shadows in the day, or at the breaking light of dawn, coming upon young troll maidens who had stayed up a little bit later than they should, where they would swoon into her embrace, and her black lips would brush their long, enticing throats as she sank two needle-sharp fangs deep into the rich bouquet, any color of the rainbow spilling across her lips.

The reality is not like that. The reality, which she handles with practicality and not romance, is that there is not enough blood for her to take from the surviving population of trolls reliably without complications. One thing that has not changed with her transformation is her appetite, which is for the better and also for the worse. She does not need to eat any more than she previously did, but her fantasies had ill-prepared her for the problem of hunting adequate sustenance for her brand new body, and at some point taking a sip from each wrist in turn will become even more problematic than it is now.

Some little part of her that she does not want to think about is hurt by how badly this has gone awry. This is not what she had pictured it to be. But the need to find food is stronger than her crushing disappointment. She still darts from shadow to shadow, but it's in the broad daylight of a city packed with humans who are unlikely to be seduced into her arms and beneath her fangs. Not all of them are polite enough not to comment on her strange appearance, and she is not always patient enough not to flash her sharp teeth at their soft fleshy faces, her fingers fondling her lipstick. She has not demonstrated her efficiency with the chainsaw for them yet.

But as the headache of hunger starts to pound between her eyes, she's beginning to think she might need to.

"I think you have missed the point I am trying to make," she says very carefully to the clerk at what the humans call a blood bank. It's taken her awhile to find it and even more time arguing with the woman who sits at the desk. "Perhaps intentionally. I am here to purchase sustenance for myself. I have no other plans beyond consumption. Why is this not sufficient?"
