MuM: Museum of....

Menstruation.

Yup. MuM's the Word!

It's fascinating really. I had to read through the Euphemism page. And the research he's (yes, he!) done into the historical ways women dealt with "that time of the month."

That's one of the holes that the historical novels never cover -- and should. Goodness knows, they cover the OTHER bodily functions :P

women, history

I just had to look and see if the euphemism page included "Walking on the beach in soft focus." It did. All is right with the world.

Looks fascinating, except I find it visually painful to read because they insist on putting every other phrase in colored text... why???

At any rate, pre-modern ways of dealing with menstruation are one of many reasons I have never wanted to ACTUALLY live in a previous era of history. Tampons are one of the modern conveniences I would have the hardest time living without.

Then again, having braved the colors, I find his assertion that most women historically didn't use any kind of pad etc. to be laughably ludicrous. Especially since he seems to base it on one quote from one era? There may have been some cultures and times where that was true, but when it's so simple to make some kind of cloth arrangement, and so impractical not to, I can't imagine most women wouldn't have done something along those lines.

My favorite euphemism from that page is "I'm seducing vampires." I need to use that one now.
