Genius. The cobwebs are beginning to clear. A little quippy tickling of the funny bone would do wonders for Twilight. You know, I think that's what was missing in the Star Wars prequels, too. I mean, what would Star Wars have been without Hans Solo? Ew, perish the thought. And Damon is made of awesome. =)
And I just think Twilight was SO doom and gloom and angsty looks that when they did have a moment of comedy (or at least what *I* took for comedy, the SPIDER MONKEY moment) it came off as absurd. Twilight just needs to laugh at itself a little :)
I just think that the Twilight movies (I'm really looking at the visual medium here) could have REALLY, REALLY benefited from a touch of levity, anything to cut the angst. I'm all for some doomed romance, but the stories, be they movies or fiction, that I really love have at least a touch of that relief.
Well, I like Twilight the book because it seems there is a little humor in there--but as far as the movie, YES, that would help a ton! RPattz just looks constipated all the time--a Damon would do wonders for the movie.
I've only seen one episode of Vampire Diaries, but from what I can tell, it's a totally different beast than the books. I seem to recall Damon being quite emo-tastic in book 5... (I'll be getting the show on DVD... I'm still pissed it's on at the same time as Bones! *grumble*)
And technically Twilight does have the comic/lighter character (Emmett), he's just never around to break up the emo-moods. Which annoys me, because he's a perfect character to do that with, and the books could definitely have used more light-hearted moments that weren't just Bella/Edward stuff.
I really should have clarified that I was talking more about the movies/shows than the books. I didn't read the VD books, but I have heard they're quite different.
And while Emmett IS a little comic relief, as you said, he's never there when he's needed. In VD, Damon is there to break down the emo the moment it happens, or at least let enough air out of it that it floats back to earth.

1) It doesn't seem to bother Twilight lovers in the least and maybe there's
room for humorless, doomed romance. (I know, not in my world either)
2) Joss Whedon has already been there and back, in style
my two cents :)

And Joss Whedon is god.
