I suspect it will be quite some time before I will have the opportunity to sleep in my own bed again but given the choice between taking up new, less desirable residence elsewhere or retiring earlier than planned to my own tomb, I will

Well enough, I suppose. It's a been a while since I've been deployed acted abroad in this capacity. I've lived through worse situations.

How are you holding up? Do you know how the king fares?

I'm not. I won't do anyone any good if I'm in ill health, particularly those I'm here to assist.

That is good news. These are trying times for everyone. The king is in good hands, then. Just remember to take a moment to yourself, too, now and then. Conserve your strength for when the king needs it most.
