Cassidy had followed his father out of his office with a sinking feeling in his stomach. He had really screwed up this time. How was it that whenever he tried to help, someone got screwed over because of it? First Dick had told him to take Logan’s secret to the grave, but a girl was dead! But Logan didn’t do it, his father did, and Aaron wanted to barbeque Veronica and kill her dad. He knew Veronica still had nightmares and Logan’s family was ruined; how had he done anything good by telling?

Now Veronica had blown the whistled on something ‘Big Dick’ was doing and he hadn’t even cared about Kendall’s extracurricular activities. But Veronica had. Everything Cassidy tried to do blew up in his face and now his father was gone, whisked away by a helicopter a week ago? Or was it a month? Maybe it was just yesterday, he didn’t know anymore honestly.

He did know some things; Veronica had only been doing her job and he couldn’t blame her. The day after everything had gone to hell she had approached him at school and he had handed her the check, the $750.00 he and Dick owed her, but she had torn it up and looked at him with sorry eyes.

“I’m so sorry, Cassidy,” she told him, touching his shoulder, “How are you doing? Is there anything I can do to help?” Dick would have said something rude or made some kind of obscene sexual gesture but that wasn’t him so he just shrugged his already slumped shoulders.

Dick hadn’t spoken to Logan since Monday, the day that Cassidy had shown him Veronica’s surveillance pictures; Cassidy hadn’t spoken to him either. That afternoon at lunch, right before F.B.L.A. started (Cassidy was a little surprised he and Dick hadn’t been asked to leave the organization), Veronica told him that Logan hadn’t been in school all week, it had been four days since any of them had spoken to him. Cassidy hadn’t let that concern him, he was too upset by the fact that he hadn’t realized that it was Friday. He wondered where his week had gone; he thought he might like to have it back, he wanted a do-over.

Dick had entered the classroom; he had been more silent this week than Cassidy had seen him in years. The last time he had behaved like this it had been at their mother’s funeral nine years ago; Dick had been inconsolable and sullen for weeks afterward. He took the seat to the left of Veronica, Cassidy was already on her right, which left no place for Duncan Kane beside his girlfriend. He was off somewhere getting her an Orangina.

With Logan out of his life Dick had been a mess and it had (apparently) only been four days. Cassidy should feel sorry for his brother but he can’t, at the moment he would guiltily admit he was only relieved. With out their father around or Logan, Dick has been much less of a jackass and Cassidy kind of likes Dick wanting him around. But on the top of the list of weird changes Dick has made in the last four days (how can it feel like a month ago and a day ago all at the same time?): his sudden and slightly bizarre attachment to a certain girl super-sleuth they all know.

Cassidy is certain that Duncan will snap sooner or later; beating on Dick the way he did on Logan. He doubts that the 09er population can take much more drama regarding Veronica Mars or the continual upheaval of their leaders, their kings and queens. Dick obviously doesn’t care though because he is placing his head on Veronica’s shoulder, whining about his American history exam after lunch. The kicker? Veronica doesn’t push him away, she makes a joke and Dick laughs, Cassidy laughs and it feels awkward but normal in a way he had almost forgotten.

In the week (how can that be right?) since they had hired her Dick and Cassidy had started waiting around Veronica’s locker and sitting at her lunch table, Dick stealing fries off her plate. And even though Lilly is dead and, well, he kind of hates Logan right now, he can’t help but think they are the only things missing to make this whole thing perfect again.

Duncan doesn’t understand why she would want to spend so much time with Cassidy and his brother, who he reminds Veronica, made her life miserable last year. He doesn’t like her bringing them dinner two nights in a row now that the maid quit (just like that, like they know how to cook or clean up) and he hates that she swims in their pool when she could be at the Kane’s. But Cassidy gets it, he knows why she does things for them, why she had befriended them after everything. Veronica is one of them, she is like them, the Casablancas brothers, Cassidy realizes. Her heart is on her sleeve if you are only willing to look at it. They have all been hurt by Logan but each of them would welcome him back if he only asked to be let in.

Duncan Kane is done with Logan Echolls. He thinks they are better off this way; Logan is the eye of a storm, destruction and chaos surround him. And if he is not careful Duncan is going to find himself more and more removed from Veronica, who Cassidy thinks is already avoiding him.

Last night Veronica had been eating Chinese with them out by the pool; they were having a good time and Dick had run inside to grab some more beers. She turned to him, suddenly very serious, her eyes glassy, “I think we all lost Logan that night in his car, the night when someone tried to kill us”.

Cassidy nods his agreement while she picks up her chopsticks and goes back to eating cashew chicken. Dick reemerges and the mood is light once again but Cassidy can’t help but think that Logan was lost to them long before the night Veronica mentions. He was lost to them that night on the bridge, the night of the burning freezer, the night the world knew Aaron Echolls killed Lilly Kane. Their Logan stepped off the ledge and sailed downward into the midnight blue water but it was this Logan, the one who lights community pools on fire (okay maybe he and Dick were there but it was Logan’s idea) and fucks his friend’s step mom, who climbed out of the surf that night.

Later, when the food is finished and Dick is trying to convince Veronica to skip school the next day and go to the beach he sees that look again, the far off look Veronica gets when she is lost in a thought. Her soft face, sad and pensive, forces Cassidy to really think about what he wants. He wants his friend back and he promised himself, his brother and her (this amazing girl that holds them all together) that he will find their Logan and bring him home.

It was that promise that has brought him here, to the front doors of the Echoll’s mansion, Casa de Killer. He swallowed, letting go of his fear of a man who was locked away in prison and rang the doorbell, waiting for Logan to answer. If he didn’t, Veronica told him a window that would be unlocked. He smiled at the thought, once a hot P.I., always a hot P.I. And that was how Logan found him, smiling.

“Beaver Casablancas,” Logan stated, not look the least bit surprised to find him there on his door step on a Friday afternoon.

“Logan,” Cassidy nodded and followed him into the house.

“I figured a Casablancas would show up at my door eventually,” he said opening what Cassidy knew to be the liquor cabinet, “you however were the last one I expected to see”.

“You look like shit, Logan,” and he did. He obviously hadn’t been shaving, or maybe even bathing, and he reeked of booze. Shock, right Cassidy? He had had a good idea what Logan would look like long before he opened the door.

“Drink?” Logan offered. Ever the gracious host he held up a bottle of tequila.

Since Cassidy couldn’t think of anything to say or even where to begin he said, “Yea, okay. Thanks”.

It was while Logan was pouring overly generous amounts of tequila into crystal highball glasses that Dick burst through the front door with all the appearance of a mad man. “What the fuck?” he exclaimed angrily and Cassidy tried to come up with an answer, quick.

He offered Dick his drink, “Tequila?” which Dick took down in one long swallow before visibly relaxing.

“Yea, thanks,” Dick said to Cassidy before glaring daggers at Logan once more.

“Wow,” Logan sighed dramatically, “Two Casablancas’ for the price of one. My lucky day”.

The brothers ignored him, Dick placed his glass back in front of Logan silently requesting a refill. Logan grabbed a third glass and filled it, passing it to Cassidy before refilling his own glass along with Dick’s.

“How’d you know I was here?” Cassidy asked with some trepidation.

“Veronica”.

“She, uh, told you?” Logan was now watching them with a renewed interest Cassidy noted.

“Kind of. I don’t think she wanted you getting in any kind of trouble, Beav,” he smirked.

“So, she what? Asked you to follow me?” he glanced over his brother’s shoulder, “Is she in the car?” Cassidy took a moment to glance at Logan, clearly concerned.

“No,” Dick said before his smug, triumphant grin returned, “She asked me for a ride home”.

The youngest Casablancas shook his head in amused dismay, “You have got to get over her, Dick”.

“Oh, so you can have her? Or Mr. Future President of the World? Or maybe the underage step mom-fucker over here?” he jerked his thumb toward Logan laughed gruffly, “No way”.

Finally, looking like his head was going to explode, Logan spoke up, “Dude. What are you talking about?”

“Veronica,” the Casablancas boys replied in unison with out glancing in Logan’s direction.

“My Veronica?” he asked in surprise.

It was Dick who started laughing while Cassidy felt himself turn pink, starting at his ears, moving across his checks, and flaming down his neck. He could feel his anger boil inside of him, years of repression, of being picked on, of being called ‘Beaver’ when there was nothing wrong with ‘Cassidy’ and something snapped. “Your Veronica?” he asked angrily with sudden nerves (balls) of steel, “Was she your Veronica when you were nailing our step mom all over Neptune?”

Dick stopped laughing and Cassidy looked away, he would not let Logan Echoll’s see that saying ‘nailing’ could embarrass him. But ah, what he would do or say for the love, friendship, even tolerance of Veronica Mars.

And so, somewhere between Dick calling Logan a, “Fucking, back-stabbing, man-whore,” and Logan calling Dick a, “Gay, butt-monkey, ass-hat,” (not Logan’s finest moment) they began to sort through their issues. Logan had dared to plow his friend’s step mom even when Dick and Cassidy had had his back at every turn that summer but Dick admitted maybe he was jealous.

“Yea, jealous of Kendall,” Cassidy mumbled after his second glass of tequila (or maybe it should be called ‘liquid truth’) and Dick punched him in the jaw knocking him off balance. Cassidy had righted himself and tackled his brother, the two tumbling over the couch, rolling onto the glass coffee table, and breaking it.

“You assholes!” Logan shrieked in a very un-masculine way. What did he care, it’s not like his dad was going to come home and be angry later, was it? No, this was Logan’s house, they could fuck up as much furniture as they wanted. Logan should have thought of this plan before he did, what was wrong with him lately. What was wrong with Cassidy lately, he shrugged. “Dick, Beaver, get up!” He finished his third glass of tequila only a moment before a drunk and angry Cassidy Casablancas kicked his legs out and brought him tumbling into the fray.

“It’s Cassidy! Not Beaver. Not Beav. Cassidy,” he huffed.

Dick got a few good punches at Logan’s stomach and one to his nose before they all rolled apart; hurt, bleeding, and covered in glass.

“I think you broke my nose,” Logan moaned at Dick, trying to stop the bleeding. They sat in silence for another few minutes, staring at the wall in front of them covered in Aaron’s movie memorabilia before Logan sighed and added, “I really love her”.

“Uh, Kendall?” Cassidy asked feeling more like himself than he had all week.

“No, I didn’t care about her. I’ve already told her I never want to see her again”.

“She left Neptune,” Dick told him.

Logan nodded, “I love Veronica. There’s just something about her”. The Casablancas’ only sighed and nodded their heads in agreement. And it was over, like that, everything that had happened with Kendall was behind them. Cassidy was clueless as to how yelling and throwing a few punches had defused the situation but he was glad to have his friend back. Maybe men really were too simple.
