Part1Part2Part3 IV.
“Uh…”
“Hey man, pull up a chair,” Dick called to his friend. Cassidy cast him a sideways glance, rolling his eyes at how thick Dick could be. Logan however was smirking and did just as he was told, he calmly plopped down in the lounger closest to them.
“So, what’s up boys?” Logan asked glancing between the two of them and raising his eyebrows suggestively at Veronica. She was clearly flustered and took a generous gulp of her margarita.
“Hey, Logan,” Cassidy stammered before letting his eyes drift back to Veronica. Logan was staring at him with an unusual intensity, making him uncomfortable in his own skin. So far Veronica had not spoken, the moment Logan stepped through the doors she had clamped her lips shut and she had thus far only opened them to take deep swallows of her frozen drink. He was waiting for the brain freeze to hit her, or the alcohol, one or the other, any moment now.
Logan would not remove his eyes from Veronica, and she refused to look at him. Cassidy couldn’t help but think how much this was like a train wreck, but those two words pretty well defined them and their summer romance, didn’t they? He opted to speak up and see if he could pull some of Logan’s attention away from her. “Veronica is working a case for us,” Cassidy told him.
He laughed, he was really enjoying just how awkward this was, Cassidy had always thought Logan found pleasure in the sickest forms. “Really?” He furrowed his brow then smirked, “In the pool?”
Dick grinned at him and went to sit in the chair beside Logan, “Nah, man. We think the new Mrs. Casablancas has something going on the side. Beav here, and me, hired Veronica to prove us right. And as part of our payment,” Dick leered back at the pool to eye Veronica once again, “we told Veronica she could use our pool anytime she wanted. Cassidy even volunteered to be her cabana boy. He makes a mean strawberry margarita, huh, Veronica?”
Cassidy glanced toward the blonde, still frozen in place, her glass now empty. She nodded with out enthusiasm but cast a small smile in his direction.
“I should go,” she told them rising to get out of the water.
If Cassidy had known Logan was coming he wouldn’t have invited Veronica for a swim; honestly if this is how awkward things were going to be, he would try to never he in a room with the two of them again. Sighing, he as well pulled himself from the water and reached for a towel. Noticing Veronica perched at the edge of the steps, glancing between her fingernails and her towel, which rested two chairs past Logan, he opted to lend her his.
“Thanks, Cassidy,” she smiled in relief and wrapped the towel around herself before she picked up her shorts off the ground.
“You’re welcome,” he returned with a faint smile, when he saw the look Logan gave him he let it slip from his face.
“I’ll get right on the case guys,” Veronica said looking at Cassidy and sparing Dick a glance, “I should have something for you,” she paused to nibble on her lower lip in the most adorable way, “Friday?”
“Great!” Cassidy replied with enthusiasm. “You could come back over here,” when she peered over his shoulder at Logan he added, “or we could meet for frappuccinos?”
“Oh! Tasty, I’m in. You’re treat,” she said with a wink and he could feel himself heat all over, he wondered if he could pass it off as a mild sunburn.
Veronica slid her shorts on over her bikini bottoms and handed her towel back to Cassidy with a smile, “Thanks,” she said on her way around the pool, heading for the house. She stopped at the door, fixed Logan with a look then waved in the direction of the Casablancas’, “See you at school tomorrow,” and then she was gone. Dick and Cassidy both watching her as she slipped through the doors.
Moments later, the time could have been measured in nanoseconds, Logan got up, slid his sunglasses over his eyes and said, “I’m out”.
“You’re leaving already, dude?”
“Yea,” Logan replied, “Something just came up”.
“I bet,” Dick chuckled as they followed Logan into the house and watched him pass through the front door.
While Dick flopped on the couch, turning the television to Mtv, Cassidy moved towards the door, explaining to himself that he only wanted to make sure Veronica got her car started okay. They were already arguing on the driveway; Logan throwing his arms in the air and Veronica staring at him coolly, arms crossed in a defensive stance.
“Whatcha looking at, Beav?”
“Um,” before he could finish Dick was behind him, also glancing through the front windows.
“I can’t hear what they’re saying”.
Cassidy cracked the window guilty but Dick only shrugged at the intrusion on their friend’s privacy.
Logan’s voice filtered in, “Veronica, you know how this works”. When she didn’t reply he continued, “Amicable division of the assets. I got the Casablancas’ and you got the Kane’s”.
“Sometimes you’re completely ridiculous!” Cassidy raised his eyebrows, as far as he knew those were the first words Veronica had spoken to Logan since their break up this summer. “Get out of my way Logan”.
“Or what? Are you going to sic Duncan on me? Or Weevil maybe? I bet Cassidy or Dick would tear off their own arms and beat me with them if they thought they could get a night at the Neptune Grand with you too”.
Cassidy raised his eyebrows at Dick who appeared just as confused by that statement. He looked back just in time to see that Logan had obviously taken it too far with his last mysterious comment as Veronica slapped him hard across the face. She pushed passed him and headed towards her car but Logan reached out and caught her arm. Cassidy moved away from the window and turned to the door, this had all the elements of ‘could get out of hand,’ but Dick stilled him.
“I miss you. God, Veronica, I miss you,” he mumbled, pulling her flush against him. For a brief moment, the calm before the storm Cassidy thought, she allowed him to just hold her. Then she was pulling away from him again speaking in a voice too low for the two snoopers to make out. But then she was gone; her car pulled away from the house and from Logan, who slumped against his SUV looking disgruntled.
Once Logan was gone as well, the boys return to the couch and make themselves comfortable, settling in for a long, lazy afternoon of television watching. Dick was the first to speak, “Logan didn’t stick around long”.
“Yea,” Cassidy agreed, “why did he stop by in the first place?” Cassidy figured he was either bored or lonely; it can’t be fun living alone at Casa de Killer. He didn’t even like to be in that place more than fifteen minutes, he couldn’t even glance out the back doors toward to pool house. He shuddered thinking about it; at least his father’s only vice was marrying gold-digging cheerleaders, of age cheerleaders.
He could hear someone in the other room, moments later Kendall emerged and Dick smirked at her. “Was that your little friend, Lyle, or Logan, whatever, like I can keep track,” she sighed, “arguing out front with some school girl in a bikini?”
Cassidy couldn’t help but notice the annoyed tone in her voice. Logan was right, why did she always have to be such a bitch? He hoped his dad ditched her, he hoped she signed a pre-nup. and got jack from their family.
Why did she even care about their friends, let alone Logan, who she hated. Then it dawned on him, a light turning on somewhere in the recesses of brain. Logan? And Kendall? But Logan was still in love with Veronica and he was pretty sure Kendall would want to fuck around with someone older and (even) more experienced than Logan. What was she getting out of Logan? Veronica would be able to figure it out, but he was pretty sure that deep down she was still in love with Logan too, yep, train wreck.
He would talk to her tomorrow at school; maybe he could find a way to tell her with out telling her. But this was Veronica Mars, the girl who looked at him like she knew all of his secrets, because she does the voice in his head reminded him. She would know he was lying. Damn, why did this whole situation have to be so complicated? Why did Veronica Mars have to be the cutest girl he knew? And why couldn’t Logan have kept it in his pants!
“Dude, what’s with you? You look all,” Dick paused, “concerned”.
“Oh, um, it’s nothing,” he told him and maybe it was. Yea, and maybe this wasn’t Neptune, the most fucked up town in California.
