It could be that Veroncia still wanted to write the paper, feeling it'd be icky if she got this special treatment. She might have still applied for the internship, we just don't know.

My guess is that after she found out about Landry's affair with Mrs. O'Dell, she decided to earn her own way into whatever internships she got, instead of accepting his help.

It was kind of suggested. Landry is talking about all of the people who were "murdered" in the papers and when he lists off Sheriff Lamb, the camera cuts to a smirking Veronica. I just assume she offed Lamb.
