A series of thumps woke her.

It used to be a comfort. Until it became a mockery of loss.

These past two nights, it had gotten louder. Yesterday, her thighs sticky with seed, she’d crept to the hearth, put her ear to the floorboard where she’d hidden it while William was outside playing with Jack.
red rum
But Will doesn’t like rum. She’d backed away with a chill. When she’d told Jack later, he’d known the drink - and had grinned enigmatically. “Tastes bitter,” he’d explained.
The fifth morning, she awakened to realize the eight-year tympani was gone.
