Our too-short Maine break

Jul 16, 2008 17:24

I'm only just recovering from our long weekend road trip up to Maine for our friend Gomez's wedding. It was a joyful union, and it was so good to see the Banditos and the Gomez clan again. It was also nice to be immersed in a wedding that wasn't mine! It was good to have a few nights of peaceful country quiet. I'm not ready to be back in NYC; ( Read more... )

You could take weeks exploring! I recommend Baxter, too- beautiful hiking (and some rockclimbing), and not so overrun with people. If you want more specifics, drop me a line- this is the land from whence I come and all.....

Please please tell me where to get lobster ice cream! I must have some when I am there next month!

In Bar Harbor, ME, on Main Street, look for Ben & Bill's Chocolate Emporium -- with this ridiculous statue in front. Apparently they don't always have it in stock -- Tim just happened to notice a sign in the window that said "Yes! We have our fresh lobster ice cream today!" They claim to be the only place in Maine that makes it. I hope they have it when you're there!

*sigh*

We're not going to Bar Harbor- I don't think we'll make it farther north than Freeport.

However, as we'll be in Portland, we can sample the duck poutine I just saw in your photo set.

Did you guys get to have blueberry milk? Smiling HIll Farm in Westbrook makes the cheese curds used in duckfat's poutine. The place is awesome, and the blueberry milk is outstanding (as is the cinnamon sugar butter, and the cheese!)

Ah, nuts. Of course, the Bar Harbor place could be lying.

Meanwhile, definitely do go to Duckfat! Their milkshakes are made with Smiling Hill milk and are absolutely outstanding, even just the plain vanilla. (Next time we'll have to hunt down the blueberry milk.)

And legacy recommendation from our last trip to Portland -- the Porthole restaurant on Custom House Wharf does a killer lobster roll on homemade bread rolls. A little bit fancy-schmantzy, as lobster rolls go, but mmm delicious.

I'm going to Maine next month too! Part of the trip will be spent in Kennebunk & the rest somewhere near the Bath/Brunswick area. Bar Harbor will have to be saved for another trip.

Can't wait!

Awesome! You too should go to the places I mention in Portland. Plus, Brunswick is apparently home to some legendarily fantastic yarn stores -- there's The Knitting Experience, Purl Diva and Halcyon. (Had it just been me and Tim on this trip I would probably have lobbied for a stop...)

You totally could have lobbied! I have no idea where Brunswick is but hey what's a few more miles on a 1501-mile road trip.

Aw!

I felt like it would've been a big detour, which would've been unfair given that I would have been the only one of us four to be at all interested in the destination. I'm shameless about lobbying for fried clams and pizza, because those are things everybody can enjoy, but specialty shops are a different story.

Isn't Acadia beautiful? Did you go see the sun rise at the top of... I can't remember the name of it Mountain? It's such a magical place. :)

Sooooo beautiful!

We're really sad we didn't have time to do any real hiking -- we got to do a little bit of rock-scrambling on the coast but that was about it. Next time!!
