The Netherlands appears a country of contrasts. Flat empty landscapes belie the fact that with 16m citizens it is one of the most densely populated countries in the world. In a country which has nearly twice as many bicycles as cars, a relaxed pace of life exists even in the capital, yet Amsterdam remains one of the liveliest cities in Europe
