TEASING TEASING TEASING
Conversation between Lelouch and Suzaku at the end of part one. AKA playing up to the fangirls, aren't we? (The narration is not translated as of this date, and this is not edited by any means)
[Note : This part occurs after the 'assassination' incident described in the previous Stage 0 post.]
*Lelouch is carrying---well, letting Suzaku lean onto him as they walk, since his stamina puts carrying out of the question. He speaks first.*
"How long have you known? About those guys, I mean."
"A...ah."
*hesitant pause*
"Since that time. Two days ago, at the beach."
"So I was right."
*Lelouch starts to sound annoyed*
"Did you fight back then, too?"
"No. They were just...loitering around, so I didn't."
"Hnnn. Then, today was to protect me?"
"...Yeah."
"What a ginormous bother."
*Lelouch is terse. Suzaku is hurt. Pregnant silence ensues for a few minutes, then Suzaku plops out some words.*
"That's...true, I guess. In the end, I was of no help at all."
"Don't get the wrong idea, Suzaku."
*Lelouch shakes head prettily.*
"When I said 'bother', I meant how you failed to tell me about them before this. If I'd only known, maybe none of what happened today would've happened."
"That's..."
"You didn't want to scare me, is that it?"
"Well, no, but---"
"Don't underestimate me so much, Suzaku. No matter what I look like, I'm still a prince of Britannia. I'm relatively used to things like that."
".........."
"Besides----you have no reason to put yourself in danger for Nunnally and me."
*Suzaku lets go of Lelouch and stands still, eyes downcast.*
"...Reason..."
"Huh?"
"Do I...need to have a reason?"
"Yes, you do."
*Suzaku looks up and looks at Lelouch deploringly and imploringly. At once.*
"Lelouch..."
*Lelouch is too heated up to care*
"As you know, Suzaku, I am a dreadfully obstinate person."
"Lelouch..."
"You yourself had said that much. You didn't care for my attitude. Well, that can't be helped. I don't believe the sincerity of reasonless altruism, and that's true no matter what happens."
"Lelouch..."
"You can say it's the fault of where I was born. Princes and Princesses, you know, are mostly like this. It's the natural outcome of being surrounded by either possible enemies or retainers."
"Lelouch..."
"That's why I can't trust unreasonable acts of kindness. The only things that can be trusted are reasoned acts, ones that profits the other side in some way. So it can't be helped if the other equation makes me ill."
"Lelouch!"
*Suzaku cries here in strangled voice. Lelouch remains unperturbed.*
"That's why, if you're saying you want to help us no matter what..."
"…........."
"I'll make up a reason for you."
"---eh?"
*Lelouch approaches Suzaku step by step. I mean emotional sentence structure here. He eventually gets close enough for their noses to almost touch before talking quietly and gently, cues in the Hitomi insert song.*
"---Suzaku. I don't know what you did 'that evening'. I don't know what burden you're carrying."
"!"
"I thought it could have something to do with me and Nunnally. But that's precisely the reason why I won't force you to tell me. Until you decide to tell me by yourself, I won't try to pry. It's a rule, I know that much at least. But---"
"........."
"You said it. That you won't use power for yourself ever again."
"........."
"'That's a dangerous thing to do'---is what I think."
".........."
"And it's also an unbelievably stupid thing to do. That kind of fool is unlikely to live to a ripe old age, and the way my theory works, he won't. But..."
*Lelouch smiles*
"I like this reasonless, impulsive you."
*Suzaku stares at Lelouch, dumbfounded. Lelouch continues.*
"So, I'll also say it for you."
"..........."
"You won't use power for yourself. If you say so, then I (boku)...no."
"I (ore)----"
"............"
"Will use my power for you."
"............"
"It's a give-and-take. Commensalism. How's that? Would you let that be your reason?"
*Long, long pause happens where, in the novel's words, no words were said and Suzaku/Lelouch only looks at their own reflections in each other's eyes. Then Suzaku smiles. Bashfully. I do not make this up.*
"...You know, that pronoun doesn't fit you at all."
*Lelouch laughs through his nose. I suppose that would be snorting.*
"The same goes for you, too."
*The final line of narration notes : Yes, exactly.*
Disclaimer : Except a few snide commentaries here and there, I did not make this up. Yes, Lelouch does have such a flair for words. Maybe it's better that he didn't grow up as a mentally-healthy prince, or the entire Empire might nosebleed to death.
