Wyvern doesn't like to think of it as a failure.
Most people don't, he learns. Most people are fond of outside influences, other sources of blame when something goes terribly wrong.
He never thought one man could go so wrong, and now he's paying for it, glued up to this wall with nothing left but his brain and the years that tick away. He doesn't think there can ever be enough people to blame before the circle comes back to him. Always back to him. (because it's his fault and there are so many things he cannot escape)
He blames his wife, for not keeping a closer eye on their children, for letting them develop a taste for adventure and danger. He blames Tia Dalma, for coming along with her come-hither eyes and her poisonous words, for taking his one and only son by the hand and by the heart and stealing them away. He blames the English, for coming in and taking his tavern from him, leaving him with no choice but to leave his wife and his daughters (but not his son, because he has no son).
He blames the pirates, because it's easy.
He blames fate, for putting him aboard this ship, desperate and desperately poor, and forcing him to swear that goddamn oath before ever giving him a chance to look into a dead man's eyes and recognize them as his own.
Davy Jones is his son.
He cannot escape this. Not a day goes by where he doesn't wish he could.
And he doesn't think twice before striking Cutlar Beckett over the head with his lantern, for stopping justice in his tracks and letting the Flying Dutchman escape with a living heart that belongs to a woman who could never be had, and souls that never should have been trapped there. Because those are his son's eyes, flickering with gratitude, then steeling into those of a man who's gone as wrong as a man could possibly go.
He doesn't like to think he failed.
